(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)But I feel like while “the video didn’t tell a story” is a fine criticism, even if I don’t always agree with it, it doesn’t mean that the video has no “theme”. Edits also don’t need to have a story, theme, or have commentary to be good. Just using the right clips for the moment, or having technical skill enough to sync the clips to the beat, makes for a good video. Which is probably why this video is so popular. But while it’s not required to be good, having a story, theme, and commentary is also a great thing. And it can make for a good video even if you’re new to editing and don’t have experience with it yet. There’s so many ways to make a good video, even if they don’t always click or resonate with everyone.
And it definitely doesn’t mean that it “has no soul” like someone who replied to the comment secret said. I am aware that you’re not the one who said that, I just didn’t see the comment thread until way later, but still wanted to say something about it. You can feel free to ignore this paragraph, since it’s not a reply to you directly, OP. But the “no soul” comment was the thing the really got me, because I don’t agree with that way of thinking here. If someone put time and effort into an edit, it has soul. It’s like a lot of art that way. But editing isn’t something that people make money from, with very few exceptions, because of the frequently copyrighted nature of the clips and music. So it doesn’t even fit typical “soulless” media criticisms, that are usually about works that are cash-grabs. I still think these videos are transformative enough that they shouldn’t be targeted more than other works that use copyrighted material, but that’s a different argument. Either way, I can’t speak for every editor, but every AMV and GMV I’ve made has taken a lot of time and effort, and every single one means a lot to me. Even the ones I don’t think are very good anymore. So for someone to come and say “this has no soul”, I don’t like that. I would hate hearing that more than someone saying they think it’s bad. And it could come off as pretentious judgment. Even the videos that barely seem like they have had any effort put into the scenes, or the flow, or don’t have an overall theme have a soul. Just making the video because you wanted to make something that combined a show/movie/game/manga/comic you liked with a song you liked is reason enough for it to exist, even if you don’t have much experience yet. And I feel that those videos have just as much personality as the better made ones. Again, I personally feel that my perceptions and experiences as an editor can’t help but influence my opinions on this matter, and I’m probably being too sensitive. I know I made this big wall of text, but I’m not meaning to attack the person who commented that for their opinion. I just really disagree with the words. If I’ve phrased something as combative or judgmental of them as a person vs. just explaining why I disagree with their opinion, then I apologize. That’s not my intention, but intentions only go so far.
Going back to you OP, I know I said I understand why the video is probably popular, but I also understand feeling hype backlash. So there’s nothing wrong with how you feel. I still disagree that a video has to “say something” to be worthwhile. But you being sick of the FMV, and you being annoyed by it’s hype is understandable. Everyone’s been there at some point for different things.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-01 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)I love fanvids, but I miss the vids of the 00's era, where the editing worked closely with the lyrics to convey a particular idea/perspective regarding the text, as well as a feeling. And most of the time there was no dialogue.
The more modern school of vids have very smooth, snappy editing, but I tend to get bored before they're even over, because there's not a lot of deliberate conceptual editing for me to sink my teeth into--just vibes. Sometimes a particular line will sync up with a particular clip, but often the connection is pretty basic: the lyric said the word "hit" and the character got punched, etc. But if there's no through-thread, if it's just a smattering of matchy-matchy one-offs, then I may have fun with the vid for three and a half minutes, but it's probably not going to actually move me, or burn itself into my mind for later consideration or anything like that.
On another note: remember the early 2010's when for some reason everything had that super intense filter on it? God, that was a choice. XD

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 12:21 am (UTC)(link)And oh boy, yes, the early 2010s in AMVs could be summed up in a Katy Perry or Never Shout Never or whatever-song and heavy colorful poppy editing.

As evidenced by my faves, just because I want a vid to feel like it's speaking deliberately and coherently on a subject, doesn't mean I necessarily want all vids to wear their MO on their sleeve. They don't have to be pure essay, I just want them to be speaking to something. Even if it's just "Look how much these misfits love each other," or, "Look what an absolute mess this character is"--as long as it's deliberate, as long as there's intention and consistency, then that's probably good enough for me.
However, if you want some great essay-style Fanvids, then there's vids like:
The Price by thingswithwings. Manpain, the video essay.

Hey Ho by thuviaptarth. The MCU and the military industrial complex.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-02 07:39 am (UTC)(link)Like if I'm watching an FMV, you don't need to *remind* me of what the characters are saying in a scene, I *know*. Having it interrupt the music is just irritating.
