So where's everyone going?

[personal profile] nanslice 2023-07-02 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Elon is doing ridiculous things with twitter and I briefly reinstalled Reddit just to immediately uninstall it due to the app being horrible and the entire site just feeling like a troll-y mess. So where are people going? Where have you guys gone? Both my tumblr dash and my DW reading page have been more active, but just curious what the denizens of [community profile] fandomsecrets were doing. :)

Probably back to Tumblr. I don't really like it, but I'm not sure where else to go. IG works for my doll fandoms, but not for the other ones.

Heh, no clue. Been hanging around here, imgur, youtube, and what few discords I haven't left. But otherwise, haven't participated much in fandom discussions or events.

Reddit and Tumblr for me
Although Neocities is still my favorite

I never left tumblr. I pop in to specific fannish subreddits from time to time and I lurk in a couple of discords, but it's mostly tumblr. I hate socmed.

I've been drifting across the Fediverse to see what places I'd like to stick around, and some other niche social sites. Tried out Cohost but left after the mod team bowed their knee to the feelings-mafia.

Dreamwidth is the only site I use regularly. I check it a few times a day.

Forgive me for asking, but “feelings-mafia”?

I’m not very familiar with Cohost.

Feelings mafia is the Japanese fandom's term for antis. Antis don't exist in Japanese fandom, but antis have targeted artists there. Translation of "kimochi yakuza."

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation!

Reddit. All of my fandoms are active there and getting more so by the week. And then today it was the main place for talking about the Austrian Grand Prix because Musk wouldn’t let anyone read anything on Twitter. Tomorrow is the actual race and based off how big the sub blew up today, tomorrow will see another massive explosion of new people on there.

I’m not sure what you mean by the site being a trolly mess, tbh. It’s possible to run into that occasionally but Twitter has been far worse for that kind of behaviour for at least the last five years. Your opinion of Reddit seems like it’s based on a very outdated reputation. Reddit had A LOT of problems on the platform and at the company. But that was like 2016, maybe 2017.

Excuse me? I wasn't even on Reddit in 2016/2017 lmao. I'm really glad the subreddits you're in are still going great, but mine have been a shit show.

What subs are you in?

Re: So where's everyone going?

Your description of Reddit is identical to the widely reported problems they had back then. And those problems don’t exist anymore, they haven’t for a long time. It’s really easy to verify that. It’s also easy to verify that Twitter HAS been a problem for many years and it was getting a little better but got a lot worse once Musk took over. So I’m really not sure why you’re saying Reddit is trolly?

They absolutely do exist today. Signed, a current reddit user.

Where? No one ever gives examples of all the toxic subs they claim exist.

I’m in r/witcher and even that sub has clamped down on misogyny and general assholery. The general assholery was always there but then the Netflix show came out and it was awful and it has a woman showrunner so the sub started to go toxic but moderators managed to stop that shit and deploy some good bots. The sub does often get hijacked with show hateboner posts but they gets loads of engagement and there isn’t really anything else going on in the canon so it isn’t surprising.

Most of my fandoms were an absolute shit show on Twitter but haven’t been on Reddit since the overhaul several years ago. And of course for the last several years dangerously toxic fandom shit has been running rampant on Twitter. Death threats to anyone and everyone involved in something that includes something fans don’t agree with, doxxing, swatting, the whole works. Doxxing may happen on some subs (I haven’t seen any but it’s possible) but death threats and swatting don’t. They can’t. You can’t actually do that shit on Reddit.

What a rude and baselessly assumptive reply.

Ok.

I came back to DW. I wish more people would and start using communities again.

+1000

I do too. I really miss having a sense of community in fandom.

Yeah, me too. But a lot of folks still seem to cling to Reddit, or prefer tumblr. I'd like a place where discussion can happen without stuff being randomly truncated or dogpiling by ridiculous amounts of folks. Which I realize can still happen with places like this, but at least it wouldn't be as frequent.

I'm on Tumblr but it's much more for personal journaling. I come on here and engage a little most days.

And then that's it.
