People hating on Ready Player One really makes me feel like a philistine. I liked it well enough when I read it. Good but not great. I did notice a whole lot of sexism the second time I read it.

Don't worry, out of the people hating it, a lot of them probably liked it once too. When something becomes cool to hate, and there are popular essays from intellects on why it's the worst piece of writing ever made, a lot of people backpedal fast and pretend they always hated it too.

Plenty of people hate things because they’re just bad too. I’ve never read or seen Ready Player One, but I did read 50SoG, because everyone else was, and I found it fucking awful the first time and maintain that it’s still fucking awful now. Twilight is trash but entertaining in its own way, 50SoG is bad with absolutely no redeeming features because the porn isn’t even good. It somehow manages to be worse than the books it’s fanfic of.

That's why I said "lots of people" and not "everyone." But I promise you that there are always people who vocally hate something that's popular to hate just because they know everyone else will think they're stupid if they admit they like it.

Or vice versa, people who thought it was fine but not amazing, and then the hype hits (like when a movie hits), and suddenly there's discussions all around and they realize the book sucks because there's nothing TO defend about it.

I think the people that revere it and the people that revile both give it way more credit than it deserves. It’s a simple (and simply written), fun trip down pop culture memory lane. Nothing more and nothing less. It’s weird all the people who either define themselves by it (most of whom are just a little too young to remember a lot of the references) or pretend it’s some super sinister thing.

Yeah, I didn't mind it when I read it, though it is unthinkingly sexist, but then I went looking for other people's opinions and apparently a lot of people, mostly men, think it's the BEST and MOST ENLIGHTENED thing ever in the world, so that was off-putting.
