If you go with Sweeney Todd, watch one of the filmed stage shows, not the ridiculous Johnny Depp vehicle. Sondheim in general may appeal to you, since even his happier endings lean toward the bitter side of bittersweet.

Seconding the recommendation to check out Sondheim.

Assassins and Passion both have downer endings. (Assassins is literally about presidential assassins, both successful and attempted.)

Follies and Company are bittersweet musicals that get into the ugly side of romance.

Into the Woods has a hopeful ending, but it goes to some dark places before it gets there.
