Unfortunately, a lot of ship wars these days are fuelled by antis on at least one side.

That's not a ship war. Once antis get involved that's the culture war.

NAYRT

How are you making this distinction, anon? (I'm not disagreeing, I'm intrigued.)

NAYRT - I'm guessing because that it's the point where it stops being about the actual ship and starts being about the morality and implied value of the shipper.

SA - Specifically, Classic ship-wars boil down to: "My ship is better than yours, and if you disagree it's because you're an idiot with poor taste and questionable parentage." Once antis get involved, it turns into: "My ship is better than yours. Also, your ship is abuse and literally a crime, which means you're a criminal. which means it's definitely ok for me to tell people where you live and report you to the police for whatever crimeWh I"ve decided is represented by your ship. This is totally normal."

What makes it a culture war and not just a dangerous disagreement is that, at the heart of it, you have two warring factions that both have the potential to shape fandom. On one side, you have the people who see fanworks as the grown-up version of playing Barbies, and on the other you have the ones who see it as an idealized version of what you want to do with your actual life.

Culture war anon

This, but it also goes out further than fandom. It's an offshoot of the culture war we're all in the middle of globally, where the far right is attempting to squash any kind of nonconformity. The anti-trans laws, which are also applied to cis women who don't fit gender norms, the anti-kink at pride people who are trying to be "respectable" by throwing their fellow queers out, Faux News just started going after aroaces, books being yanked out of public libraries from just one complaint, etc etc. The part in fandom is just an offshoot of the bigger culture war in society. Anything anti is just christo-facism wrapped up in leftist terminology.

Ship war is more:
Malibu Barbie is better than Ballerina Barbie!
Oh yeah? Ballerina Barbie can kick Malibu Babrie's ass any day!
*Barbie fight*

The modern anti is just the final evolution of the batshit factions of the harmonians and zutarans of old. The beedrill to their weedle, if you will.

Yeah, it's all of the worst aspects of those plus a heaping load of entitlement, all fuelled by a self-delusion of sanctimonious moral superiority.

The sanctimonious moral superiority isn't new... I remember Harmonians insisting that if you actually thought Ron/Hermione was endgame (not even if you shipped it. just if you recognized that's where the series was headed.), you were obviously an abuser.
