Tbf the bar of what I consider happy ending is much higher. I think it's a Russian thing :D
Anyway.
In the musical (I think it's logical only to use musical's plot) Natasha learned her lesson not to be so driven with her dick emotions, and even survived it. And she've got herself a friend with Pierre who continues to value her as a person (and as a woman) even after she was "disgraced".
Pierre learned not to be so reactive and that he actually values his life and is capable of romantic love.
And now they have future to maybe change things even if this future is full of hardships. I think it's quite hopeful

Yeah, I can definitely see why people find the ending hopeful, especially because I know what happens to them in War and Peace, but for me, it's not exactly musical happy you know? It's like saying Man of the La Mancha or Camelot has a happy ending. I guess? For me those musicals are more that the dramatic elements have been resolved according to the themes rather than that the ending is happy.
