What is your job?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
You can be as vague or specific as you like.

Did you go after this career or was it unplanned? Do you like it?

Immigration attorney. Not what I planned going into law school, but fell in love with it on my first internship.

I love the field. The particular job is decent. I do want to work in a nonprofit someday, though. And I'm honestly starting to feel the urge to move on.

Childcare. I kind of fell into it as a career - it was a fallback skill that ended up as a career. I both love it and am tired of it.

Logistics. I actually have a degree in Special Education. But the pay is so terrible that I could not survive on it (plus I could only get sub work). Worked as an emergency dispatcher for a bit. That was tough.

Then, I worked at a cousin's business as a bit of everything. Left abruptly due to management.

Been working at my current job for 5 years. Started as a production planner but moved to Logistics. I enjoy it and hope to one day leverage it into a higher paying job.

My job can be described as IT babysitting. Technically I'm considered a business analyst, but I do some work in back end databases and understand some of the data storage aspects of the website I do technical training and troubleshooting for. I want to do more data work, documentation, and security analysis. Unfortunately, there are a lot of training circumstances that are making pursuing those types of tasks and projects nearly impossible right now.

Finance. I went to school intending to go into law. 2008 happened and I had to get a job, any job, to stay afloat. This lead me to finance (which is a huge field, but I'm not gonna get more specific). I actually like it. I get to handle millions of dollars a month of corporate money, so I feel no great weight of responsibility (they can afford it if I make a mistake). I'm the head of my team, so I get to decide what the priority is, what the time line is, which improvements we're going to do, and management actually asks my dealbreakers before making any decisions that effect my team. Nobody wants to hold up the money.

Merchandising for a food brokerage. Definitely unplanned but I freaking love it.

Have worked in healthcare for almost 20 years and loved it for most of that time but the pandemic really turned me off of it. I'm currently looking for...I'm not really sure what, but basically anything other than healthcare.

As a non-nurse healthcare worker I feel like I got all the worst of the pandemic (all/extra work) and none of the "benefits" (extra pay etc).

However I have job stability, good pay, good pension, and my job is pretty fun so I don't plan on leaving, I just wished people would remember that there's more people in running a hospital than nurses lol.

I have done a lot of things like insurance adjusting (though nothing could make me go back.) I am now a librarian and its a lot better even with the pissy people whining online.

A specific kind of financial research.

It was totally unplanned, I got into it because I was unemployed and they hired me. I mostly like it - it's very stable and the work is probably dull to most people but I personally find interesting or at least endurable. Sometimes we're really busy and that's really annoying, other times we're not busy and we can take it easy. I like the people. It's fine.

Graphic designer. Sort of planned, it's a field I chose to go to. But I was never actively into it though. I wish I knew to what field I want to go because I am tired of being designer and I feel trapped.

laboratory logistics assistant. Basically I organize stuff so the actual chemists in our pharmaceutical lab can use their time on chemistry instead of organizing stuff.

I like it fine, it's all about patterns and problem solving and I can listen to music. In the past the work was just killing me but I got some new anti-depressants and stopped giving a fuck. It'd be a total bitch to replace me, so why should I stress?

I didn't plan this as a career, and it won't be. I should go back to school now that I know what I like.

Data entry clerk and informal dispatcher here. Not planned, but I like my work environment. The people there are kind and accommodating.

I've been in the energy market since 2003. Switched employers fairly recently in hopes of learning more. After twenty years, I know about 5% lol.

Retail. Not planned at all, I just kind of ended up here because i did not know what else to do. I've been doing it for 8 years, and how I feel about the job has gone up and down. I'm at a point now were I'm getting tired of it, and I'm activly applying for new jobs.

I have kind of a love-hate relationship with working retail. I'm not in a retail job right now and I miss it sometimes, but other times I feel so relieved. Good luck with your job search if it's not for you.
