Shrug. Sometimes a 'ship' is what the fic-writer says it is. I've seen stories marked as A/B that I would never in a million years have pegged that way from just reading the story. (There's subtext and then there's 'this sure damn looks platonic'.)

As you say, sometimes it's best just to let people do their own thing even if it doesn't entirely makes sense from the outside.
