I wish writers would post general reminders not to send them fanfic instead of putting one person on blast about it. That person is now open to harassment from everyone in the fandom, and if there's a chance that they honestly didn't know it wasn't kosher. It's more likely than you think; not everyone is a manipulative attention seeker, some people are just excited about their ideas and think it's neat that they could tell the writer.

This, I totally get why he would respond that way but I'd rather see a general announcement than a response to one overenthusiastic fan. Leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.

That would be a lot more plausible if this was the first or even 50th time the issue had been addressed publicly. Since that’s not the case, well. Play stupid games; win stupid prizes.

People contact Gaiman directly because he's known to answer questions directly and frankly, many of them want the public attention of having been the person who got Neil Gaiman to talk to them on tumblr. If they wanted a private answer, they could've requested that. Gaiman was polite. If his fans aren't as polite, I'm not sure he's got even a partial responsibility for that.
