tbh I think ff9 had a lot going for it but i also call it 'depression, the game' because it's sooooo depressing. it's the one i replay the least because i just cannot with the constant downs of it. (i know other ff games have dark story lines too but this one just idek it revels in the gloom)

I really couldn't get into it. I loved 8 and 7. I got to the boss of the forest, to show that I gave it an honest shot, but NONE of the characters grabbed me.

9 is my favorite FF game and I'm glad you dug it.

I do have some issues with the story (in that it got more nonsensical and unfocused as it went on), but overall, I loved it. Charming and and bittersweet and it has Vivi. 'Nuff said.

I'm old, but yeah, this was definitely a thing. There was a mini furore in one of my early small fandoms because a fanfic author humble bragged about chatting with adult children of the creator, who were now in charge of the canon work(s) themselves. She'd sent them links to her own (egregiously pretentious) fic and a few others to show them just how awesome fanfic was and how they should totally adapt these fics and make them canon, stuff like that. Then she was really taken aback by wiser fen who said PLEASE DON'T DO THAT, because back in the day it only took one DMCA request for FFnet to deep-six a fandom off the archives. AO3 wasn't a thing yet.

She threw a tantrum about all the awful meanies who were picking on her and how dare we imply she might be violating copyright law with her fanfic because gosh she'd never dream of such a thing and [insert lots of blubbering and whining]. Not epic enough for fandom wank, but amusing.

Not naming the fandom in case she's still around. She wasn't malicious, just kind of dim. Hopefully she's gotten smarter and more mature since then.

What I remember is that the media initially seemed to think it could shame people out of writing fanfiction by dragging explicit things fans had posted online in front of show writers (or even the actors whose characters were being shipped together), and filming the latter's reactions to it. So this might not be something fandom started at all.

Also, I find it crass when I suspect the fan bringing something to a canon creator's attention is exploiting the fact that this person has a platform: no matter what Neil Gaiman said, that fic idea reached a lot of people who only saw it because they were wanting to hear Neil Gaiman. But it's sometimes been interesting to see what they have to say about ships or characters that people love really hard or other things that are basically only a *thing* within fandom. So, "comment on my random plotbunny to your entire audience" bothers me, but finding out that the guy playing Grand Admiral Krannic loves the 501st and Empire fans in general was pretty neat.

I may be misremembering but I remember the not sending people your fanfic/theories being a thing because it opened the original creator up for being sued if they wrote something even remotely close to what the fanfic author sent them.

Yeah I don't want to go back to the days of a weird cloud of shame about fandom and fanfiction, but I do miss the separation. I don't want fandom and fanfiction to be mainstream.

I wish writers would post general reminders not to send them fanfic instead of putting one person on blast about it. That person is now open to harassment from everyone in the fandom, and if there's a chance that they honestly didn't know it wasn't kosher. It's more likely than you think; not everyone is a manipulative attention seeker, some people are just excited about their ideas and think it's neat that they could tell the writer.
