I really dislike ugly guy/hot girl relationships in fiction (especially if the guy doesn’t have any other particularly significant qualities to recommend him--and “niceness” doesn’t count unless he’s extraordinarily, eleven-out-of-ten nice).

The secret is, on the rare occasion when the dynamic goes the other way, with an ugly girl and a hot guy, I find it really hard to suspend my disbelief. I wish I found it easier to believe the premise of a hot guy falling for a not-very-good-looking girl because she has a good personality, but I don’t. It just feels like improbable wish fulfillment to me, in a very glaring way.

Yes, it happens IRL, but it’s rare enough than when it shows up in fiction I’m like, Really? Him fall for her? M’kay.

Chill? Are you new to the internet? There is a global chill shortage on it.

Are you alien to the concept of complex thoughts and feelings? You should get familiar with it.

IMO, GRRM was doing a very good job of writing this in ASoIaF (I am NOT counting the TV series here), but... well, at this point, readers will only see that relationship fully developed in fanfiction (unless by some miracle he completes the series).

Society's not big on the ugly girl getting the pretty boy, we all know that. Even if it does happen IRL and we're not supposed to care. Maybe it is wish fulfillment right now. I don't see what's wrong with that. Maybe if gets normalized in fiction, it'll stop being seen as wish fulfillment... even if that's probably nothing more than a wish for me.

I can see why this one's a secret. I don't see why it should be considered any MORE of a burden on a handsome guy, but culturally, it defintely is.

One thing I find kind of annoying that fiction doesn't get into, when it's going to show a pairing where one of the people is much better-looking than the other, is that the discrepancy and other people's awareness of it puts a strain on the relationship. In all these fat husband / hot wife combinations, the writers just sidestep the fact that in any situation I've ever seen, people would be trying to get her to have an affair with them or asking her why she settled for an ugly partner or making digs about beauty and the beast, and that's something they'd both have to process.

And with a handsome guy and an ugly woman, the kid gloves really come off. Which means to tell that story and make anyone out here believe in it, they'd really have to have clear why this is the girl for him and make him say it. And show it. That said, it could be epic. But it absolutely does take work, because such a story is not following in the footsteps of the bazillion stories that came before it.
