I have resorted to going back to ffnet and jebus, its been so long since I've been on there and so much has changed. So glad I have adblocker but a lack of fics for my current fandom is not great - BUT I am looking through the Naruto fics now.

I cracked up because typing in ao3 into the search engine has brought up new articles with one of them reccing alternative fanfic sites.
I've heard of Quotev, Watpad and ffnet - but I don't think that I have ever heard of commaful.com before for fics.

What was the last thing you bought for someone else?

I agree with two-thirds this. Self-inserts aren't necessarily cringe in and of themselves, they only get cringe when they're taken to the hypercompetent lengths that you describe - it's the difference between making the character the author and making the character a character.
