Its still going in the fandoms I'm in.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm currently working on a Coffee Shop AU and have no regrets.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure this is still very much a thing.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I still see Coffee Shop AUs but NGL good fics in this setting seem to be harder to come by these days than a few years ago.

It's never stopped being a common AU trope; that weird time is ongoing.

I think the appeal of Coffee Shop AUs (for some) is basically the exact same thing as the un-appeal (for others): they're mundane, which for some means relatable and easy to write, while for others it means bland and generic.

It's not generally a trope I'm into, personally, but never say never. I actually think the biggest reason they usually don't work for me is not because of the mundanity of the premise, but because when someone writes a Coffee Shop AU they don't tend to have much ambition for the story. They're writing it because it's basic and easy, not because they want to really dig in and figure out how to make the mundane premise gel with the characters, and make the compelling aspects of the characters and their dynamic shine through in this new context. The latter I could get into, but it's exceedingly rare.

Yes, I don't usually read them but an author I really like wrote one, so I gave it a go...and it was actually good! There was plot and characterisation as well as cafe vibes.

WAS a weird time?! very much still happening

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
IS a weird time, you mean.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, not really that weird? I find adults writing high school or middle school aus a much weirder trend. And don't even get me started on classification fic or a/b/o as fandom trends

To be fair they didn't say the weirdest, just general weird to add to the weird pile that is fandom.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw man, I used to really like reading those, but I can't remember the last time I was moved to read a coffee shop AU.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone is an architecture student was weirder.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Remember when people used to post pictures of cats on the internet? The past was wild.

Dogs are better.

Still a thing.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s a thing of the past in my current fandoms and I’m glad! But I also read a GoT Jaime/Brienne coffee shop AU that was perfection, so my stance on the trend has softened a lot.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a trope where you don't need a degree (though perhaps you're working towards one), are usually either mysteriously earning enough to support yourself or have put together a cozy space (even if you're not rich), and said coffee shop usually provides a found family and love interest, all with a backdrop of caffeine and pastries.

Not all id fic has to be sexual.

They've moved out of fic

Coffeeshop AUs aren't fic anymore, they're award-nominated published professional serious writing

I don't think those went anywhere?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-12 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
When was this? How did this become popular?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-12 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Legends & Lattes would like a word

(Anonymous) 2023-07-12 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Remember? Buddy I wish I *had* to 'remember'. They're all over the place for my fandom, where the canon setting is a big part of the draw.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-12 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
wdym? I still adore coffee shop AUs. and flower shop AUs. Brightens my day whenever one pops up in one of my fandoms
