(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)I think the appeal of Coffee Shop AUs (for some) is basically the exact same thing as the un-appeal (for others): they're mundane, which for some means relatable and easy to write, while for others it means bland and generic.
It's not generally a trope I'm into, personally, but never say never. I actually think the biggest reason they usually don't work for me is not because of the mundanity of the premise, but because when someone writes a Coffee Shop AU they don't tend to have much ambition for the story. They're writing it because it's basic and easy, not because they want to really dig in and figure out how to make the mundane premise gel with the characters, and make the compelling aspects of the characters and their dynamic shine through in this new context. The latter I could get into, but it's exceedingly rare.
