I'm currently writing one as a vent fic because I can't afford therapy.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
lol that's why I mainline therapy fic or comfort fic. Give me all those self care and motivational tips via my favorite characters getting better!

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with two-thirds this. Self-inserts aren't necessarily cringe in and of themselves, they only get cringe when they're taken to the hypercompetent lengths that you describe - it's the difference between making the character the author and making the character a character.

...Hahah this reminds me of waaay back in the day when someone encouraged me to write a self-insert fic with Sephiroth. I basically had him isekai-d into the real world and well, he showed up on my doorstep, so what was I supposed to do? But then it started getting messy when, uh, he still wanted to destroy humanity, and it wasn't like I had any way to stop him...

...I never figured out how to end that story. And never tried to write another self-insert.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-12 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds amazing! Did it end up online?

Hahah no, other than occasional excerpts sent to my encouraging friend via email because social media didn't exist yet in its current form - and everything I did post was posted on my Fortunecities site because I wasn't even aware yet of ffnet. XD (This was right after FF7 came out. ...For the first time.)

I think I disagree in that I think self-inserts work really well when the self-insert is bringing outside-canon thinking to canon. those are quite fun because some canons are like high concept where common sense is sacrificed for the vibe, and its just funny to see what happens to characters when you reintroduce street smarts.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are the worst sort of snide, I'm better than you claims the author, type of self insert fics and should be cleansed with fire. And, NGL, I just lost a little bit of respect for you for defending them.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone has their own tastes. I hate that type of fic, but there is nothing wrong with liking it. Don't be a jerk.

+1

(Anonymous) 2023-07-12 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
This.

And for what it's worth, I've seen some good fics in this genre, for canons that have promising characters but make them act dreadfully stupid. Not your thing? Fine. Lashing out at another person just because it's theirs? Really not fine anymore.

yikes this seems like projection. adding back in the type of things that the style ignores is basically pratchett's whole thing can be very fun and sometimes chaotic which is even better.

but you can think whatever you want about me, that's none of my business!

(Anonymous) 2023-07-12 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Man, wtf. I hate self-inserts with passion. But wtf don't be a dick

(Anonymous) 2023-07-12 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I find fics like this smug and obnoxious too, but why are you being a dick about it?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
God moding, got it.

you know not always but sometimes that's very fun too!

(Anonymous) 2023-07-12 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-12 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I like OP's type of Self-inserts, but I agree with you that fics that play with bring outside-thinking can be fun in a "how would it go" way.

[personal profile] meadowphoenix 2023-07-12 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, I also like OP's type too, but the little challenges to the genre conceits can just be very enjoyable and self-inserts (or OCs) work pretty well for that imo.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree, they are the most fun to write and read as well! I also embrace cringe unapologetically.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it’s like the saying goes: “Do not kill the part of you that is cringe, kill the part of you that cringes”.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-12 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Really can't agree. I am so tired of story protagonists being mediocre in nearly every way, because there's all this criticism of competence. Give me more of Sebastian from Kuroshitsuji. Even at that extreme, I love the type, and have since I first laid eyes on it.

If fanfic climbed the heights of badass characterization tons more than it already tries, I would be so there for that. And being phenomenal is a good look on all kinds of characters - it seems pretty awful to claim people should deprive their self-inserts of the chance to be this, when it can be so fun to write.

Also, I've met people who have a horribly hard time saying even one nice thing about themselves, without burying it in ten disparaging ones. That seems like much more of a tragedy than the possibility that some fanfic writer might imagine themselves as cool. In any make-believe reality, anywhere.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-12 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
But some of the appeal for some people is the power fantasy placed upon the self-insert. And that doesn't always have to come with self-awareness of it being cringe. Of course, too much of the power fantasy can warp one's own view of the world.

But while it's only in fanfics, I am more willing to give self-insert fics room to be whatever it wants to be rather than find ways to enjoy it "better".

Personally I don’t get self insert fics or reader fics, so I don’t read them. I find the concept pretty weird, like breaking the fourth wall. I’m here to read about my favorite characters getting into situations, not inserting myself into the narrative.
