Really can't agree. I am so tired of story protagonists being mediocre in nearly every way, because there's all this criticism of competence. Give me more of Sebastian from Kuroshitsuji. Even at that extreme, I love the type, and have since I first laid eyes on it.

If fanfic climbed the heights of badass characterization tons more than it already tries, I would be so there for that. And being phenomenal is a good look on all kinds of characters - it seems pretty awful to claim people should deprive their self-inserts of the chance to be this, when it can be so fun to write.

Also, I've met people who have a horribly hard time saying even one nice thing about themselves, without burying it in ten disparaging ones. That seems like much more of a tragedy than the possibility that some fanfic writer might imagine themselves as cool. In any make-believe reality, anywhere.
