WILD that you think someone hitting the 'I liked this' button means they want you to stop writing altogether.

Like, yeah, as a writer I want comments, and yeah, I'm annoyed when there's a lack of comments, even by the comments that are just like... an emoji or the words 'extra kudos', but you know what I do? I reply to them to say thank you/emoji back (unless it's like... the world's most obnoxious copy-paste wall of emojis monstrosity, I guess?), like... if it's not spammy, I express gratitude, even if I would much rather someone hit the kudos button than comment with a single emoji. (at least if it's a heart, I know they liked the fic... sometimes it's something I have no idea how to parse)

Here's the thing, you absolutely CAN turn off notifications. But a LOT of readers sort by kudos, so even though there's no *algorithm* that sorts what fic to show people based on likes, you *will* get more eyeballs on your work when people see that others have left kudos! I don't, because I don't think kudos are any indication of how good a fic is, let alone whether I'll like it, but I know that lots of people do, and so I appreciate every kudos, I just don't need the email alerts about them.

"I totally blame the victim for what's happening to her, but I don't want to put my name to that because I'm afraid it sounds victim blamey."- You

This pretty much says it all. Strongly seconding!

Re: Why do you write fic or make fanart?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm relating entirely. And well after learning about the 3-act structure, I got really into Kishōtenketsu, which suits my sensibilities as a writer better. It centers change as opposed to requiring conflict.

This is a neat article about it. https://stilleatingoranges.tumblr.com/post/25153960313/the-significance-of-plot-without-conflict

You absolutely do. Oh my lord, that's it. Thank you so much, anon!

Re: Fic grievances vent

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, hate when you can't vibe with like... 90% of what's out there.

In one fandom, people got REALLY aggressive about top/bottom dynamics in a way that feels... the kindest way of viewing it is 'baseless', but it comes off feeling very looks-based rather than how they act around each other. And I had people literally telling me I was WRONG for writing them any other way, which turned me off of 'yeah these two characters switch' to 'Actually I will only ever write or READ fics where it's the other way around'.

In another fandom (where I enjoy a little switchy stuff but still do have a preference that's counter to the main trends), it's very much a top=Dom and bottom=sub problem combined with the like... completely wild butching up of one character and feminizing of another, and it's WILD to me because the one who's got to be a big, butch manly man who's always a Dom top is like... very soft, and his flirting style feels VERY bottom-y, and the character who everyone wants to put in panties and lip gloss and call 'princess' (gag me) is *actually* butch??

I want to note when I read fic I know is by other men who love men, I *do not see* this shit, because men who have sex with (or at the very least have an interest in sex with) other men are a lot more likely to understand like... the body language stuff. Even if it's not intentional on the part of actors, like... you're picking up on what body parts a guy emphasizes when talking/flirting!

I just know it takes me OUT when I read a fic and a character who canonically like... does more crotch-framing and peacocking in a way that I associate with service tops is suddenly a pillow princess bottom. Takes me even more out when people think 'ah yes, calling a guy 'big boy' is a sure sign that you view him as babygirl actually, this is top behavior'.

NAYRT - Huh. I thought you were a troll at first, but your utter desperation to have the last word at. all. times. suggests that no, you're actually just an angry, insecure person who doesn't know how to get the validation they do desperately crave and is trying to simulate that validation for themselves through sheer vocal insistence.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't help you with the proper word, but I LOVE that song. It always starts out my autumnal music mix.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the ultimate in "meh" or "could do better" as a response.

Not only is this perception of what kudos means deeply pessimistic, it's also just incorrect. It's literally called a "kudos" button, as in, "praise and honor received for an achievement." Receiving kudos on your fic is receiving a compliment. It may not be the compliment you want, but that doesn't mean it's not a compliment.

I write and read. As a reader, I leave comments. Sometimes I leave long-ass comments. But I'm also a busy person with ADHD, which means that I only manage to leave a comment on a fraction of the fics I enjoy. There are dozens of fics out there that made my head spin with how excellent they were, that I didn't comment on, because I didn't have the time or energy that day, and I sure as shit don't have the attention span or executive function to be going back to things from days/weeks earlier to comment. Sometimes fics get comments, and sometimes they don't, and that's just how it is.

So no, kudos absolutely do NOT mean "could do better." Kudos are praise. Some of those kudos mean, "Hey this was decent," and some mean, "I really enjoyed this," and some mean, "OMG THIS WAS WONDERFUL I LOVED FIFTY DIFFERENT PARTS YOU'RE A GENIUS KJDFKJFKJL!" But almost no one is clicking the kudos button thinking, "I would like the author to derive from this kudos that they could've done better." That is a totally irrational thing to assume.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
This so much. Kudos make me feel so much better about my fics than I used to when comments were the only form of feedback.

The way my insecurity works is that if I only get positive feedback from X number of people, my brain tells me those were probably the only people who read and enjoyed my fic. Rationally it makes sense to assume there were probably people who read the fic and enjoyed it but just didn't comment, but my brain is like, "Nope; seeing is believing. Ergo, only six people read this and liked it."

Kudos let me know that all those people read my fic and liked it. Okay, maybe only a few of them LOVED it, and maybe a few of them are just giving it kudos to be polite, but I don't care if 300 people liked my fic 8/10 amount, or 7.5/10 amount. That's good enough for me! I'm not invisible! People are enjoying my work! Hell yeah!

No offense, but fuck you a little bit?

The will to live is one of, if the strongest, human drives. In real life people have done worse than rape when a gun was put to their head, and it doesn't make them evil or immoral. But it does make the people who held the gun evil and immoral, though.

I hope you never, ever are in a position to council the victims of ANYTHING, as lacking as you are in empathy, and basic understanding of humanity.

You're welcome :) Have fun re-reading!

I think the same composer did some good stuff for Cosgrove Hall's adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Soul Music too - only Sioni Bod Da comes close to the tone of Wind in the Willows' theme, but it's all worth a listen.

You beat me to it! It's rare I actually remember author and titles, but I just happened to reread this one last week. I was so excited I knew the answer to a fic search lol

coolies.

says someone embarrassing with nothing better to do.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
omg dude. I'm so sorry - I didn't realize you're one of the internet-rotted morons who thinks niche internet subculture is actually the same value as in real-life political views.

You have my condolences, I hope that you grow back your single functioning braincell some day and have a better life.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
as you wish <3

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Well. I now know that people are passionate on the kudos vs commenting issue.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I guess doing this is better than being stuck on Tumblr or actually finishing my own fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Different anon than the above - but yeah, there's someone that's in a REAL mood in the comments. I think being on anon is getting them to vent in ways they don't get to do anywhere else and now its everyone here's problem.
