AO3 -> Preferences -> in the "Comments" section tick the box for "Turn off emails about kudos".

You may still get them, and you won't get more comments, but at least you don't have to deal with the emails if they frustrate you.

Hoooly shit this is wild. Like I get being frustrated by lack of comments but then you went right off the rails towards the end of the secret there.

All that aside, it is extremely difficult for some people to leave comments. I have a friend that has legit panic attacks about leaving comments or people replying to their comments. Commenting on fic is not immune to the weirdness that is anxiety and mental health issues. To use an old overused phrase, your privilege is showing. (And your lack of empathy and imagination.)

I completely do not understand writing fic solely for people to fawn over it. Like I get that that is a bonus for a lot of people, but as the only reason you do it? That's wild to me.

As a reader I love the kudos button. I rarely comment on fic (I've had very bad experiences with authors complaining about types of comments and it's made me a little paranoid) but I love that I can send some kind of 'feedback' that I liked the fic by clicking a little button and sending them a little virtual kudos.

No one actually wants you to stop writing, unless you come and complain about feeling terribly put upon and underappreciated. But I think most of us are not willing to push ourselves to engage a stranger just because we read something they wrote. If that makes you feel taken advantage of, the thing to do is find a hobby where you think other people treat you better. Where your expectations of what people do is more in line with what they actually want to do.

While I'm happy enough to get kudos, a comment or two would make me so much happier and more likely to continue writing in the fandom. Doesn't matter in a large fandom, but in a small fandom it does. Couple of dozens of kudos, and no-one being arsed to do more than expend the almighty effort to press that button, do not make for a happy author. It's the ultimate in "meh" or "could do better" as a response.

Yes, it's anxiety-inducing to post a comment. Oddly enough, it's anxiety-inducing to post a fic too. So we tend to stop doing it if we get just kudos dispensed from on high. And then there's no more fic in a small fandom as the author heads off to friendlier spaces.

Or to put it another way, I agree, in a way, OP.

Honestly, I think it would be great if Discworld never got a "definitive" adaptation, but instead a lot of different takes. I don't need a Discworld Cinematic Universe. An anime movie here, a lush fantasy horror there (Lords and Ladies would so work for that), a campy comedy, a hopeful animated children movie... Discworld is great because it's so multi-faceted.
