It struck a nerve because we're tired of entitled authors whining that they don't get enough comments/comments that say what they want/comments in the style they want. People need to stop expecting everyone else in fandom to cater to them.

'OH MY GOD THE CREATOR OF A FIC EXPRESSED A WANT FOR A MEASLY COMMENT WHEN THEY SHOULD BE SATISFIED FOR PROVIDING ME FREE CONTENT. THOSE BASTARDS. MY ENTIRE LIFE IS RUINED WAAAAAH'

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
OH MY GOD I HAVE A BUNCH OF HITS ON MY FIC AND EVEN THOUGH I DON'T KNOW HOW MANY OF THOSE PEOPLE MEANT TO CLICK ON MY FIC AND OF THOSE WHO ACTUALLY HAS STARTED READING IT AND OF THOSE WHO ACTUALLY READ TO THE END AND OF THOSE WHO ACTUALLY LIKED IT AND OF THOSE WHO ACTUALLY LIKED IT ENOUGH TO SAY SOMETHING AND OF THOSE WHO HAVE THE ENERGY/SPOONS/MENTAL HEALTH TO ACTUALLY COMMENT... I'M OBVIOUSLY BEING DENIED COMMENTS BY EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO CLICKED IN MY FIC BECAUSE THEY ALL OBVIOUSLY READ IT AND LOVED IT SPECIFICALLY TO BE MEAN TO ME WAAAHHHHHH

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 02:45 am (UTC)(link)

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, dude, you ok there or did someone force you to comment one time.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT - Dude, it's incredibly obvious what you're doing. You're just embarrassing yourself at this point.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone replying to this secret is embarrassing

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)

<3

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Considering what you got for a comment, this is the perfect reply.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
But it's not entitled at all to passively consume authors' fic and never leave one comment of course... /s

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

I love how you assume that no one here leaves comments. I just left a slew of comments (just about every chapter) on a 14 chapter fic because I had something to say. But if I don't leave exactly the reward you want (comments, cause fuck kudos) and don't leave exactly the comment you want (unadulterated praise) and don't leave it in exactly the format you want (long/emoji/no emoji/whatever) then I'm entitled. Sure. *eyeroll*

Maybe your fic just sucks?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
If the only reason you right is so people kiss your ass, you're better off not writing, kthnx

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
*write

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah sorry I had a cat in my lap trying to rub herself in my face because she's in an affectionate mood.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
lol.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Aww omg

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
This, so much.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
What you really don't seem to get is that the social contract here is different for what you think. It's not "I will give the world a gift as long as I recieve X many nice thank-you cards, afterwards," it's "I wrote this. Read it if you want to, and I can be reached over here if you want to say something."

The arrangement we've got works for literally everyone except the people who expect to be paid.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. A lot of the comments defending the secret writer seem to assume that everyone who doesn't agree is only a reader. I write fic and I do value comments higher than kudos, but I still appreciate kudos. It tells me people liked what I have shared, and it tells potential readers that at least that number of people found it worth reading.

The uncharitable side of me thinks that if a fic genuinely gets no comments at all, then it's just not a good fic. If people like OP do get comments but think every kudos they get should also have been a comment, then lol.

+100000

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a writer, I don't read fic, people can leave comments if they want or not if they don't. Passively consuming things is what 80% of people who watch/read things do, fandom is no different and part of putting stuff out there is understanding that.

And from the whining I see in this thread I'm going to be very rude: if people aren't commenting on your fic then it either sucks or is very mid to the point that people having nothing to say.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-15 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you entirely. And if I had any doubt about what kind of ridiculous the people trying to argue for the opposite point are, their extreme reliance on appeals to emotion pretty much settled the question.

On the upside, I really appreciate all the more that the authors I follow on the AO3 never pull this kind of behavior. I sort of took that for granted before I saw what a source of drama comments could be on f!s.
