Re: Why do you write fic or make fanart?

I don't post online, but I draw a lot of fanarts of my favourite characters. Like, every day I draw at least some sloppy sketch of my current obsession. I do it because I like drawing and I like watching the characters. I like studying their clothes, their original style (I usually draw characters from manga but not always) and their expressions and doing little stupid comics with them.

One day I'd like to have the courage to post online, but I got low-key bullied when I badly drawn fanarts years and years back and I never truly recovered lol It wasn't even something tragic, just people telling me I couldn't draw. Which was true, mind you, but I already had a lot of insecurities about my art due to my mother and sister etc and that experience online traumatized me ahaha
In the meantime, I'm still drawing for myself. :)

Awwww sorry about that anon. It can be very rough. As someone who’s never been talented but worked hard at art lessons until like 20something yo I always felt humiliated by talented kids (in my mind I was the worst artist ever but looking back now it was not that bad) but looking at fandom artists now I’m like “well even I could do better than that with the right software/hardware” . Which is to say my art was just at that “we all have seen worse, but also much better” point when I gave up. There was room for improvement. But I hated it too much to enjoy it anymore.

Lately I have been trying to go back to drawing and feeling like some popular fandom artists are mediocre at best skill wise is what convinced me like no amount of “your style is fine!! etc” had ever convinced

Sorry to hear you gave up on drawing for a while. I hope you'll find your passion again!

For me drawing remained one of my main passions, but I draw mainly stuff not related to fandom, usually OCs (I just like drawing random people) or from observation now. Lately I've been practising landscapes and I really really like it. I love drawing stones and trees in graphite and playing with tones and value. I'd like to do plein air painting in the future, but I'm still working on my watercolour skills.
...I feel like these are not the skills that fandom are looking for, sadly lol

I also loathe digital drawing. Like, I LOVE LOOKING AT DIGITAL DRAWINGS. They're beautiful! I can understand and admire the skills some digital artists have, but I just don't enjoy drawing on a tablet. When I forced myself to learn how to draw fanarts on a tabled is when I was beginning to give up on art. Pen/pencil + watercolour on paper is where it's at, for me.
And that's... uhm... kind of a problem if you want to share fanarts. Taking good photos of graphite or ink & wash drawing is kind of complicated. At least, all of MY photos sucks.

I also perceive some part of fandoms to be very ageist. I'm not a teenager anymore. I'm a person in my 30s now. I know that my drawing skills are NOT 100% BAD now, especially if I'm drawing what I like, but when I see 15 years old drawing incredible stuff with incredible colours I'm like... Jesus. I can't compete in the fanart department.
IDK I just don't want to expose myself to fandom. Too intimidating.
