Depends on who your obscure favs are, I guess. Like, Gin's probably not going to turn up to ruin any headcanon at this point (even though I really wanted him to meet the Straw hats again).

Not really. I'm quite tired of the argument "the only reason you see no merit in this thing I consider uber-valuable is because there's something fundamentally wrong with you." That's just a transparent attempt to silence disagreement with personal attacks, not a logical conclusion of any kind.

I really enjoyed this show, but your idea is also really kickass. I'd love an action-fantasy series with a 40+ lady tbh, that's be nice for something different.

In my experience, it depends on the type of OC. I've read some phenomenally written background and supporting OCs, and as a result I have a lot of time for tags like "background original characters" or the like.

OCs as the main character of canon-universe fics, however... yeah, I can say with honesty I've never read one that wasn't horribly written. And perhaps confirmation bias as a reader has something to do with it, but perhaps there is writer bias as well, in the sense that the vast majority of those fics are written by a particular subset of fans with a particular itch to scratch. And, as with many other tropes that attract a specific category of fan, there is an echo-chamber effect where the same ideas, phrases, devices, and (in this case) characterizations and archetypes, become recycled and regurgitated ad infinitum.

Sure, there are probably some great ones out there. But the odds of finding them are pretty slim, and after the eighty-seventh version of the same story with the same bad writing regurgitated from some other fic you read two days ago, you kind of stop looking.
