*shrugs* For my first decade and a half or so, in fandom, I didn't come across one single trans!character fic. And I read fics by the thousands. Genderflips were common. This wasn't. It's become common, but it wasn't.

I don't think anyone ought to be ashamed of writing slash even if it is a fetish. As far as I'm concerned, homophobes just eventually realized that threatening liberals with "you're hurting marginalized people" was the easiest way to make them insecure about doing something that mainstream conservative rhetoric also claims is sinful. You don't believe in god forbidding sodomy? Okay. Maybe you'll believe that gay men hate you for having dirty thoughts about their sex life. That's just repurposing the way cis men were criticized by feminists for jerking off to lesbian porn. And doing something that unscrupulous Christians are very good at - exploiting ignorance and the desire to not be bad.

This is obviously a visibility issue tho? Of course there was hardly any trans fic when transness was rarely talked about anywhere. A lot of people who would realize later that they were trans weren't aware that transness was a thing.

I used to write genderswaps.

Surprise, it's how I cracked my egg! And so did every other person I wrote it with!

I used to draw genderswaps.

Still cis. I think I made something wrong.

Years ago gay people being in fandom 'wasn't a thing' because we weren't fucking comfortable outing ourselves to potential harassment from homophobes. Like I remember the 'fictional gay is okay because it's not real' stance that m/m fandom stood behind because being gay was not as socially acceptable as it is now.

So yeah, trans fic is 'new' because trans people are feeling safer to be themselves in this space like us cis gays have felt for about a decade now. It's not rocket science and it's not a conspiracy to 'steal' your m/m smut.
