Oh yeah I've been there, I don't get to full-hater status, but I won't pretend that I don't become much less charitable towards characters or ships I've ended up disliking or hating because they have annoying fans.

I don't go full hater, but my interest will very quickly diminish if there is a lot of bashing of other characters. I quickly turned off 10/Donna since more than half of the fanfic was bashing Rose, Martha, River, or all three.

I don't think I've ever gone from liking a ship to hating it because of stans. I have gotten a distaste for a ship that I was fairly neutral about because of obnoxious stans. But generally, tinhat or asshat stans just make me leery of interacting with the fandom and careful about telling others that I like the ship, lest they lump me in with those stans.

I am sympathetic to shippers of ships where most of the other shippers are jerks and annoying because I know how it sucks and makes you embarrassed to even say you like a ship, I'm more likely to dislike a ship if it obscures/intrudes in ships I like or it is the leading cause for a fandom-wide mischaracterization of a character. (I learned to just mind my own business tho.)

I never thought I was like this, but my small fandom has gained a few very vocal members of one ship who post about it incessantly in the main series Tumblr tag, often putting down the competing (but more popular) ship while doing so and acting like this ship is canon and who cold possibly argue. Suddenly I'm finding myself going from being largely ambivalent about their ship to absolutely hating it, so I get you OP.

I sometimes feel like doing this, but my solution is to not engage in the fandom. Johnlock got me really tempted to be a hater tho.

I mean I feel you. If I do genuinely like a ship, then I don't stop liking it because of annoying fans, but I might SEVERELY limit my interactions with the fandom to my own little corner.

I have been turned off of specific ship *dynamics* because of people being jerks.

And, if there's a character I don't particularly care about, that can certainly go from 'indifference' to 'dislike' if they have really mean stans. Like, I don't mind people being 'obnoxious' the way some people complain about, I don't care about *cringe*, but the people who are just assholes about ship wars or which character is best, that just makes it really not FUN to be in those spaces! I don't want to hang out with fans who are being mean to people!

I'm the opposite. When I kinda like something, and I see a lot of hate for it, I immediately turn into its biggest fan for life. Which can lead to situations where I feel like "I agree with what they're saying, BUT HOW DARE THEY SAY IT. >:("

I don’t turn into an anti like you but obnoxious shippers can kill the ship for me if the phrases or tropes or whatever they’re always on about seep into the fic. If there’s a show I haven’t seen and the fandom is obnoxious, I’ll automatically hate the show.

No amount of fanwank will ever turn me off of my ships. However, it's extremely easy for fandom "annoyingness" to turn me off of a pairing I'm neutral on. TBH I often end up annoyed by pairings just because they're the shiny new thing and my dash wont shut up about them, to the point that I don't even want to block the ship tag because like a quarter of my feed will be blanked out posts (tedious).

Not that I bitch about the shiny new ship openly, because that would be jerkish. But in my mind I often end up tipping over from neutral to "this ship annoys me."

Can't relate. For me, a character can only represent themselves, and it's the same with ships. If people declare their love for it in ways I don't want to be around, I will just write and ship it without interacting with them.

Conversely, shippers for a certain pairing can be the loveliest people in the world. It will not convince me that their pairing or fave is for me when everything about the characters puts me off. The way I feel about other fans is separate from how I feel about canon. Through and through.

Anything else feels like it's blaming one person/thing for the failings of something else that they've got zero control over.

If I like something obnoxious stans usually don't matter much. If I am neutral on something omg stans are going to influence me so much. The most hated character of the show? Now they are my favorite. This couple is so cute? You bet your ass NO.

It wont make me hate something I already love, but nothing will turn me off of a character or pairing that I'm neutral about than pushy, obnoxious stans.
