Fandom vents, anyone?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-18 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Because I have one.

I collect Pullip dolls and it’s been a long time since they’ve made one that I want to buy. I see the new releases and think, “Oh, that’s cute”, but I have no urge to add it to my collection. I just want them to release a doll that I’ll be excited about.

Awww, anon. I am the opposite though, sometimes I see a Pullip I find cute but then am reminded that I don't partake in doll-collecting (out of my price range but I do think they are cute).

Re: Fandom vents, anyone?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-18 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
They are pretty pricey (some of the collab ones almost gave me a heart attack when I saw the price), but sometimes you can get lucky with sample sales and the secondhand market. I got my first Pullip via sample sale for forty dollars and she was nearly perfect. But doll collecting is a slippery slope, so definitely stay away lol

Omg, I'm so happy to see another doll collector comment! I don't have any Pullip, but I have a Hestia doll and she's lovely. Has there been a quality downgrade in the new Pullip releases, or just designs you aren't into?

Not sure if anyone else's been through this, particularly neurodivergent people, but I have always been "the quiet anonymous" in fandom and I enjoy that because people often misunderstand me so it's better like that. I have no energy for silly arguments. I love debate until we reach the point of "agreeing to disagree" and realizing why our opinions are divergent, but most tend to get very heated.

This makes me unhappy both because my opinion will never be the prevalent one, so it's easier to get ratio'ed but also because I can't make a career in fandom if I can't socialize well so it's the same as everywhere else. Even if indeed I am knowledgeable about it, it's not worth a lot unless I know how to communicate and I don't know.

This feels more annoying than usual today because this "popular" girl in my fandom who is often at con panels is being VERY annoying about a product and I tried to stand up against her but was quickly reminded that, no matter what I say, or how much more knowledgeable I am, she will always be more influential.

I don't have many words tonight but just know I definitely feel this.

As a fellow ND, I always feel like I did a big Wrong when I say (write) a thing and someone tells me I'm wrong.

And then I get super pissed off when I look back and realize it was a half thought and if I connect the two things I was talking about to connect to the point I was trying to make, I feel like I will be perceived as wanting to argue/display my know-it-all attitude by back tracking and refusing to be wrong. So I just stop engaging.

I also have a weird paranoia (fully aware of where it's rooted from) that people only talk with me to steal thoughts and ideas from me and claim it as their own.
So I often feel like my peace is protected by being a random comment anon.

I wish the creators of various fandom-related top ten videos would stop throwing in random snide hate comment about something completely unrelated to the list. It is really annoying and can ruin an otherwise great video, even if I actually agree with their opinion on that media. Keep unrelated stuff out of the videos, please.

Also, I hate when everything has to be a comparison. Propping one thing up by denigrating another. If the only way you can promote one movie/show/character/ship/etc. is by bashing another, then you really aren't praising it very well.

One of my former favourites has gotten bad about this, lately, it seems to me. (Jules Gill of WhatCulture and Future Game Show. It seems to be since he started doing FGS that the change happened.) He's always been opinionated, but generally unless it was an inherently negative list, he wouldn't go on about 'this sucks' (aside from the occasional 'I do not like this, but here is a positive that fits this list') - and even then, he'd at least stick to the games or movies actually listed in the list, not going on about some random other thing. Or at least that's the way it feels to me. I honestly don't know if Jules has legitimately gotten more snarky, or if I'm just noticing it more for whatever reason.

(Jess, Josh, Psy, and Tilly are still always good, though...)

This isn't even about one music fandom in particular, although current Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran haters do come to mind - but I hate how people make hating a musician their whole personality.

I don't even like either of those peoples music so this isn't even in defense of them - but I just don't listen to their music and get on with my life. I even have my own playlist to listen to or when I'm working and their music comes on... idk I'm just not paying attention to it while I work.
But the people I'm talking about will go absolutely apeshit about how much they don't like a musician/band whenever they find someone that does like their music. And its so fucking boring, every single time.

I guess the annoyance for me is that I'm been hearing this dumb nonsense since the earlier 2000s with every 'ew Justin Bieber', 'ew One Direction' or whatever is popular to hate at the time. Someone even tried it with me when they found out that I still listen to Evanescence and went on a tangent to tell me how boring they thought the band was. I don't know if this person expected me to blow up at them or something, but I was like 'Cool. Anyways I still like Evanescence and you can like what you want, I don't care.' because I know not everyone is going to enjoy the same thing all the time forever since humans aren't part of some hive mind shit.
Its just so easy to just like what you like, rather than get so obsessed with what other people are doing. I know its different when people get harassed about NOT liking the same music - but that's not what I'm talking about. Just the assholes who just hunt for unnecessary drama and have to let you know how much they hate certain people.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-18 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly I think my distaste of certain people is almost as relevant to my personality as the extent to which I like some others, personally. But I understand it's not very nice to go on rants about how much you don't like (thing) to a fan, unprompted.

I feel sorry for people who don't have an identity outside of being a hater. (Unless it's something or someone actively making life suck shit for someone else. And even then I'd be like, "bro, I agree X is shit but go outside and touch grass or something.")

Re: Fandom vents, anyone?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-18 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
They're trying to get a rise out of you so they can add "and their fans are batshit" to the list of reasons why the band or singer deserves their hate.

Re: Fandom vents, anyone?

Whenever I come across someone who doesn't like a certain thing, especially a famous person, it's always telling that they just want to find someone to revel in their hate with them.

Like, whenever someone wants to go off on Taylor Swift I'm always like "I mean...I just don't pay attention to her?"

I wish I could but she's everywhere!

My dude, step away from the socials/internet.
Stop listening to US pop music then.
Find a hobby that isn't revolved around pop culture.

I'm really sick of youtube video titles that assume the viewers are really ignorant, i.e. "nobody remembers", "you forgot", "you didn't know", "you never realized", etc. Especially when a lot of it is stuff I already knew anyway.

X ENDING EXPLAINED is my villain origin story.
I hate this trend. Kudos for people who insert the word "probably" in those titles, it's a bit less condescending

Could be worse, could be the "DESTROYS" youtube vids that the algorithm keeps trying to force feed me with every so often. No, I will never watch something about a rightwing bastard claiming to "DESTROY" someone or something.

Ugh, yes. Or it's something that's hyped up to be important and it ends up being a bunch of nothing.

Putting readers at risk

(Anonymous) 2023-07-18 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
I was reading a fic with a 17 year old character, and the writer had embedded - not linked - NSFW fanart of that character.

In my country, it's illegal to view drawings of under-18 year olds in sexual situations which is why I never click on fanart for this pairing.

Because this writer chose to embed, instead of linking to, the fanart, I was put into a position where I was forced to break the law. This infuriates me!!!

Re: Putting readers at risk

(Anonymous) 2023-07-18 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, what. Come to think of it no idea if that’s illegal in my country. Did I break the law when I was a teen reading high schoolers BL doujinshi???

Embedding NSFW art is just rude and I agree that people shouldn't do it. But it's so weird for me as a person from country there is breathing if you are gay is going to be criminal offense soon enough, that you are mad about breaking the law.
