Huh. I’ve seen more of making the asshole nice, rather than the other way around. (I think there was some OOC noncon in Yuri on Ice fics, but I wasn’t in that fandom.)

Same here. My fandoms love to turn the villains into woobie good guys, which is not what I am there for.

Same.

It seems to be more of a pairing based thing than a fandom based. So it's generally rare, but if you have the "right" otp you'll see it everywhere.

Hopefully in your fandoms that trend is at least tagged. It is in mine, and I'm so thankful 'cause I love Dark!Character fic.

Oof BIG same
One of my current OTPs appeal to me because the characters are both solidly *good* guys whose values are aligned, who click with each other very quickly, who have this big overlap in their social circles before that point, like... neither of them is going to go yandere on the other, neither of them is going to be some criminal mastermind or villain, they're VERY much two people who sort of fall into orbit and WORK.

I *have* characters and ships I enjoy who are villainous/toxic/dangerous/bad for each other in ways that are interesting, if I want that kind of story, I'll go read one of those!

But when it's just like... a dark and edgy 'evil' take on a canon sweetheart, I HATE it. I wouldn't go so far as to call it triggering but it's just a hair beyond what I'd call a squick, for one character in particular. Like in my prior fandom I hated mafia AUs but at least those characters *had* backgrounds where they needed violence to survive and where they had oppressive family shit and I got why they were popular even though I didn't enjoy them. But when it's a character who not only *isn't* violent, but who textually, canonically, openly hates the idea of being that guy? I hate it.

I get where you're coming from. I have pairings where I really, really don't want to read that. I hope your fandom is at least good about tagging it.

It's late and I'm too tired to comment more extensively, but yup, I feel exactly the same way. And there are a LOT of these sorts of fics in my current fandom. :(
