Truth

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
People keep saying this but I can't say I agree. Does it sometimes get tossed around too quickly? Probably. Do most people know what type of people fall under this term AND do those people often use it as a descriptor for themselves? Absolutely.

Found the anon who keeps complaining of antis, I guess. Sorry you got called out so hard.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol overreacting much? Sure, I guess that makes you the anon who keeps acting like a textbook anti, only to come whining here that they totally got called an anti for no reason boohoo.

It's like TERF, lol. ... only most people who are called TERFs really are TERFs.

+1

Antis do exist and I've been in fandoms where they are common. It sucks, and they have a real chilling effect on creativity in those fandoms, because no one wants to risk being targeted by them.

someone disliking something or choosing not to read about it or engage with it does not make an anti. Antis are the assholes who run around insisting that fictional things they don't like should not exist, and bully anyone who likes any of those things, don't bow down to them, don't grovel before them, etc.

But yeah, the term does get thrown around way too much.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. I do see it still used correctly in some case, ie: about a group or individual(s) who are actively harassing other fans. But most of the time I see it used as 'I don't like the opinion this person has' and then label them as some puritanical republican because that person disagreed with them.

But this isn't the first term to get used to the point of becoming meaningless before and it won't be the last.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the opposite for me tbh and I do think it really strongly depends of the fandom in question.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That I can believe, but unfortunately my current experience in my fandoms it's been the latter most of the time. Which is very annoying because it is a useful term to quickly label a bunch of nasty fans, not throw on someone because they have a character HC or opinion that someone doesn't like.

I've just gone back to saying 'toxic fans' because that's what they are.

There's a troll or two here on FS who calls "anti" about random things, but outside of FS I've never seen anyone use it for anything besides a fan who is against anyone shipping ships or liking characters they think are problematic.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was so baffled by this one. I'm sure I'm just not in the same fandoms as the OP, but in the circles I'm in, 'anti' is used *very* accurately for the most part?

I saw a Tumblr post making fun of people who post stuff criticizing antis and don’t get that they themselves are antis. In the tags, OP posted “full disclosure” that they’re anti-DDLG.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Lmao

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe meanings are important so I only call people anti when their comments meet certain criteria.

1."I don't like this so it shouldn't exist at all"
2. "People who like fiction that touches this topic in any way should be punished or fixed from liking it"

If the thing you're saying unsarcastically meets either of these, sorry bitch you're an anti and idc if you're mad. Seethe.

SA edit to add

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Also people who believe in the idea of "drawn CSEM" . Unless it is a drawing heavily or entirely referenced from actual CSEM a drawing cannot be CSEM. It can be tasteless , nasty and sickening but CSEM is an important term that literally refers to material made by the exploitation of children

It is an important term because FBI need to be able to single out stuff that's creation and demand requires hurting and snd abusing actual people.

The FBI does not need to have their tip lines filled with reports about drawings and stories when they could be helping victims .

There's also possibly the most common variant, "I believe creating content of this nature is ethically wrong/toxic, and I judge people who do it."

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
ah right i knew I might be missing one

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
This seems to be the fate of most of all the culture battle stuff, eventually all the terms get run into the ground.

*eyes the term Mary Sue*

The people is see complaining about this the most (who also always go "wah you can't say anything CRITICAL anymore!!") tend to be people who have been -usually rightfully- accused of having anti traits in their behaviour and just don't want to admit it.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
People gonna hate me for this but lol exactly what I always think. They either do that or be like "no we're the NORMAL people". and LOLOLOL

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL yeah I fucking hate how broad yet specific the term "anti" is now.

Like, back in ye olden times of 15 years ago, "anti" to my understanding was someone who specifically hated on a thing (IE. "Anti" in say, the Star Wars fandom meant they were there to hate on Star Wars).

Now, we have to understand that if someone says they're an "anti" fan they're talking about being an anti-shipper and all the nuances that go along with shipping wars.
Yet leaving no nuance to the idea that some fandown participants aren't here to be on any sides.

Like, there are too many lines being drawn in the sand and do you all really find this fandom fighting bullshit fun?

They all sound like Charlie Brown's teacher to me. WAAAH WUH WUH WAAAH WAAH WUH.
