Funny thing is, FMA fandom wasn't always a milquetoast fandom. Back in 2003, when the first anime came out, there was tons of great porn, Roy x Ed, Ed x Al and Roy x Riza were the most popular ships (although there was also a lot of variety in smaller pairs as well). No matter what you were looking for, you could almost always find something to read. There was an enormous amount of creativity and it was so much fun!

How the mighty have fallen. Fuck the fandom morals police.

I remember lots of Edvy too

Edvy was one of my first big m/m ships.

I only liked it more when the first anime decided they were also brothers.

It’s true. Because the first anime was a mess as well

Spoken like every other fan who discovered FMA with the first anime, watched it religiously every week, and sung its praises and wrote fanfic while it was on the air, and then turned and pretended you always hated it as soon as it ended and a BNF made a Livejournal post about why it was Satan and the manga was God.

Wrong on every account (discovered it through scans and only finished the second anime because 12yo me had a bad case of They Changed It Now It Sucks with the first) but I chuckled. Did that happen? Who was the BNF

LOL did this happen? I'm mildly curious about that drama.

Meanwhile I watched it when it was airing in my country (almost on par with Japan's original airing) and still prefer the first anime and the Conqueror of Shamballa movie to the complete intended story. I have read the manga until the end and enjoyed it for the great story it is, but have absolutely no interest in watching the Brotherhood anime.
If I had to rewatch FMA I'd go with the first anime. That shit was messed up, but IMHO funnier and more entertaining than the manga (that I still like).

There was some good RoyxHavoc, too... plenty of EdxWinry, AlxWinry, the occasional EdxAlxWinry, and a surprising amount of MaesxRoy for how devoted a family man Maes was, but people knew how to be cool about it, you know? I'm sure in the greater fandom there were ship wars that I just wasn't around for, but the people I hung around were very ship-and-let-ship (or multiship), for the most part.

Roy x Riza is still the most popular ship but now it's all "girlboss pegs her himbo" 90s sitcom dynamic or domestic marriage and babies.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, really? That ship was my jam in my baby fan days, and the first one I ever wrote fic for. I'm so not here for that new dynamic:(

ayrt

Yeah, I used to like it, but not the way it's being written now. do the shippers insist that anyone who writes anything else for them is Doing Fandom Wrong and also against feminism?

Man, I still have some Alphonse/Edward doujinshi in my collection. Those were some of the first ones I've bought. Rock'N'Dolless was my god!
I was in that fandom from 2003 to 2006 and it was so much fun! Conqueror of Shamballa was so fucked up, but so entertaining.
I still remember that fucked up Al/Ed chinese visual novel. SO GOOD OMG what great memories.
