But all of those apply to FMA except for homoerotic.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
What?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol agreed, anon. FMA is one of the best shounen out there and one of the mildest fandoms too.

Once I had a Naruto fan describe in great detail, for no reason, why Hinata’s role made no sense - and I watched maybe 5 episodes of Naruto in my life but they were so enthusiastic I didn’t have the heart to stop them. I had fun. That would never happen with FMA I feel.

The problem with being in fandom for shit media is that you have to consume shit media. I am not strong enough for the MCU.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Ikr. Though some manage not to consume this shitty media. My friend was an active fan for a couple from books she never read. Just summary. It never stopped her from writing fics

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
MCU made a lot of money and is objectively popular. Calling it shit media is really etilist.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Omg shut up

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
The crappier the source, the more my fandom enjoyment is.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly.
If the canon material is very good there is almost no reason to write Fanfiction and explore the characters further or write what is and fix it fics. People will be satisfied with the canon and go elsewhere.

+1

(Anonymous) 2023-07-24 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Whereas I'd prefer to have fun but not be pulling my hair out at the sheer idiocy of the source material. And like I don't watch nothing but Objectively Good media or what have you, but I would not willingly subject myself to 99% of shounen anime even if you paid me. There's enjoyable shit and then there's god-awful 'not even so bad it's fun' dog-shit, which is shounen.
queenslayerbee: Isabelle Adjany as Lucy Harker in 1979's "Nosferatu the Vampire". She's surrounded by darkness, looking over her shoulder while she wears a white nightgown and a cross as a necklace. A hand with long nails like a claw is reaching for her neck from the darkness behind her. (Default)

Same. A lot of the media I love wouldn't be considered good by ~prestige standards, but *I* consider it good and worth my time for one reason or another. I wouldn't stick with it otherwise. That's far more important to me than a fun fandom experience, whatever that means, especially since my M.O. consists in finding my little corner to play with and ignore the noise LOL.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
OK, I actually like(d) shounen, but THIS. Why would I subject myself to some shitty idiotic canon just to read couple of good fics? And maybe look at some decent fanart for like 5 minutes? No thanks, I would rather be alone in fandom

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Funny thing is, FMA fandom wasn't always a milquetoast fandom. Back in 2003, when the first anime came out, there was tons of great porn, Roy x Ed, Ed x Al and Roy x Riza were the most popular ships (although there was also a lot of variety in smaller pairs as well). No matter what you were looking for, you could almost always find something to read. There was an enormous amount of creativity and it was so much fun!

How the mighty have fallen. Fuck the fandom morals police.

I remember lots of Edvy too

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Edvy was one of my first big m/m ships.

I only liked it more when the first anime decided they were also brothers.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
It’s true. Because the first anime was a mess as well

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Spoken like every other fan who discovered FMA with the first anime, watched it religiously every week, and sung its praises and wrote fanfic while it was on the air, and then turned and pretended you always hated it as soon as it ended and a BNF made a Livejournal post about why it was Satan and the manga was God.

There was some good RoyxHavoc, too... plenty of EdxWinry, AlxWinry, the occasional EdxAlxWinry, and a surprising amount of MaesxRoy for how devoted a family man Maes was, but people knew how to be cool about it, you know? I'm sure in the greater fandom there were ship wars that I just wasn't around for, but the people I hung around were very ship-and-let-ship (or multiship), for the most part.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
Roy x Riza is still the most popular ship but now it's all "girlboss pegs her himbo" 90s sitcom dynamic or domestic marriage and babies.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, really? That ship was my jam in my baby fan days, and the first one I ever wrote fic for. I'm so not here for that new dynamic:(

Man, I still have some Alphonse/Edward doujinshi in my collection. Those were some of the first ones I've bought. Rock'N'Dolless was my god!
I was in that fandom from 2003 to 2006 and it was so much fun! Conqueror of Shamballa was so fucked up, but so entertaining.
I still remember that fucked up Al/Ed chinese visual novel. SO GOOD OMG what great memories.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
hang on what? The canon of the manga is considered "bad"? that's news to me. I always thought the manga had some spectacular worldbuilding at least

(Anonymous) 2023-07-25 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
No, OP is saying the canon is good and the fandom is bad. They're saying they stick to fandoms for bad canons unlike FMA because good canons don't result in good fandoms like bad canons do.
