Read a lot for this ship back in the day because I absolutely adored it. It just was right up my alley: Grumpy old asshole who is just rude as hell and out of any fucks to give and damaged shady scheming younger guy with major daddy issues? Sign me up!
I think I'll go hunt for fic again one of these days.
Also, for once a BL side pairing I like is fairly popular, hooray!

Ok but consider, Livejournal ship manifestos that went into every conversation and glance between the ship

(This is how I got into Spones back in the day. Still my fav Star Trek ship)

Oh that used to be a big part of my participation in fandom way back in the day! We'd have such fun discussions on LJ with screencaps and long lists of reasons we loved a ship. It was so fun! It wasn't like we were trying to change mind of persuade people or convince people it was canon or anything, it was just part of the way we used to say "I LOVE THIS AND THIS IS WHY."

there's definitely a fun way and a not-so-fun way to "prove" a ship imo. The fun ways are very fun, and I like them even for ships I don't like.

Nothing to comment on the fandom itself.

But on the “discourse” thing I wanna thank you for explaining why some anons… seem to HATE argumentative discourse.

And about that I just have one thing to say - you know ship manifestos are yet another form of fanwork right? Just life fanfic, fanart or what have you.

Some of us aren’t “argumentative” because we want to convince the entire world that our ship is better, it’s just what we feel comfortable doing and maybe we are shit at drawing or creative writing too.

OP

I get that, and yet at the same time, it's not a form of fanwork I enjoy, even if I agree with the points being made. The worst examples feel like making a tedious federal case out of a ship. I put "justification" in quotes for a reason - it because I don't think that's what people are necessarily trying to do when they engage in this type of discourse, but unfortunately, some cases really feel like a long-winded, grasping at straws attempt on someone's part to justify their ship in a court of law.

Not all such meta is like that, of course. Some people manage to do it in a funny, entertaining fashion, and I enjoy that. I think the key (for me) is keeping short and sweet.

AYRT - Totally understandable, anon, not every type of fanwork is for everyone just like not every fanwork is for everyone (for one the type of meta you hate is what OC fic is to me) I just wish fandom wasn’t that judgemental about meta (which is really just “eloquent squeezing”) often. Thanks for taking your time to explain as well :)

Same, OP!

I'm usually someone who is very ???? at ships who never met getting super popular (unless it's clear it started out as a kinda fandom joke and developed from there) but THIS one I support. Have already read fic and regret nothing.
