It is a bit of a stretch to call Tony an antihero. He's more of a straight-up villain protagonist.

I remember complaints about male fans glamorizing the mob life, but not Tony in particular. Maybe because the show also leaned into the middle-aged family man part of his life?

I joined a discord Sopranos server ran by antisemitic and racist people who saw nothing wrong with what Tony did, so I'd say there are fans who idolize Tony.

I think the show is really admirably clear-headed about the fact that Tony is a deeply evil person. And also all the rest of the guys - I remember reading that there are some scenes that they put in to remind the viewers that Sil is actually a piece of shit.

There are still some people who idolize him but they're mostly people who idolize mafiosos in general so it sort of blends in.

It's a mob show, and you watch mob shows because the mob is terribly toxic but in an enjoyable way. the other shows have a sympathetic premise like "high school teacher tries to make money to beat his cancer" or "ad exec has traumatic past" but there's absolutely zero sympathetic stuff about the mob. it's "cool" to some extent yes, but not sympathetic.

it is however the first tv show in my memory to go "if this deeply fucked up person got therapy they might just use it to be more horrible" so kudos to the Sopranos for that.

this question makes me wonder if people feel similarly about Boardwalk Empire

I think we get the same levels of hero worshipping by some of the same people who do that with say, Walter White. Some people will only ever absorb the white male power fantasy and not see the full picture of what the show's intent is.

But I think The Sopranos overall doesn't really go for the "narratively neutral" approach where there could be a level of plausible denial that the audience is supposed to take Tony's side because here are the excuses he uses on himself to claim he is still the "good guy" or the "antihero".

The show goes in firm and clear: "Tony does bad things and blames it on everything else to not hold himself accountable and because this is the life he chose, his life will not end well. He won't even see it coming because he doesn't ever know when he might get whacked."

Very sharp for the last scene to be at a family dinner to remind you that Tony's claim of doing what he does for his family yet he and his family are never truly safe.

And I think most audiences can agree that by show's end we know Tony deserved what will come to him.

I'm not capable of imagining any fictional building without my head randomly picking from a handful of real building I've been to. And which one it picks will often be completely random and not the best suited to what kind of place it actually is. It's always either a specific one of the many apartments I lived in as a kid (but only the one), particularly my parents' bedroom in that apartment for some reason; the house of my best friend in late elementary school; or my old high school even if the fictional place isn't a school at all sometimes. That's it, that's all I ever see.

Read a lot for this ship back in the day because I absolutely adored it. It just was right up my alley: Grumpy old asshole who is just rude as hell and out of any fucks to give and damaged shady scheming younger guy with major daddy issues? Sign me up!
I think I'll go hunt for fic again one of these days.

I wouldn't call The Hobbit a prequel, even if there were some changes made to editions following the publishing of The Lord of the Rings. It was first published seventeen years before The Fellowship of the Ring.

Just tell them you gave it a try but it's not for you. You don't have to get into specifics if you don't want to, and if you do you can explain that subtext isn't something you're interested in any more, I think most people would understand that tbh. I happen to like some of the censored Chinese BL but I am more than understanding towards those who don't like that it can't be explicitly gay(and frankly other aspects of censorship in China really guts the teeth out of some of the adapted BL so it's not as if I'm fully on-board with everything either).
