I wouldn't call The Hobbit a prequel, even if there were some changes made to editions following the publishing of The Lord of the Rings. It was first published seventeen years before The Fellowship of the Ring.

Yeah, if anything, LOTR is the sequel to The Hobbit, but given the tonal shift, it might be more accurate to call them cousins.

idk i think im talking more about fandom than like publishing date. all my friends treated the lotr trilogy like the main thing and so did the fandom spaces they, and i, were in.
