OP - First of all, lol.

But yes, I have personally known exactly one instance of an M/F couple where the man was considerably better-looking than the woman. Like, not "he was a 6 and she was a 5" type disparity, where someone else could easily think she was the 6 and he was the 5. No. I'd say this guy was in the top 5%, looks-wise (tall, fit, nice face) while she was in the bottom 5% looks wise. The part that made it particularly baffling, though, was that he seemed to have a pretty good personality (friendly, personable, reasonably smart) while she was miserable, rude, and crass.

I met them a few summers ago while they were staying at my folk's place for a week. Then I saw them again last summer at my cousin's wedding, and he was fitter and more personable than ever, and she was uglier and less personable than ever. It was a total headscratcher.

Like, either he killed someone and she has the evidence, he has a really controversial kink that she's willing to service, or he knocked her up and is a diehard believer in some kind of "If you get her pregnant that means you're married at least until the last kid is grown or you don't deserve to call yourself a man" ideology. IDEK.

A perfectly reasonable line of thought, but nope, they weren't rich at all (and presumably still aren't). And he was the primary bread-winner. In fairness to her, they did have three kids, and domestic labor is very much real work; I would never dispute that. But for the limited time I spent around them, he was also a lot more actively involved in parenting than she was.

I mean sure, this first one is possible. Her bigoted attitudes don't become untrue when she's alone with her husband, but it's possible she's more pleasant to be around in private. Your second point is a dud, but since I can't prove it and you seem disinclined to give me the benefit of the doubt...*shrug*

NAYRT but looks were only one of the things mentioned about this person. You can be hot and an asshole, or ugly and nice to be around, but if you're both ugly and a bummer to be around? Generally people like that have two main options, find someone equally ugly and unpleasant, or find someone with serious self-esteem issues. :/

Sounds like this guy may've been the latter.

Right?? I'm not the OP but that scenario also feels a little wish fulfillment to me because I so rarely see a real life couple where the man is hot but the woman isn't. As awful as it sounds, I think that's down to women being more open minded and having a broader range of traits they find attractive in men, and men having a much narrower, more superficial range of traits they find attractive in women.

Honestly, I think a lot of this comes down to money and power. I look at Bishounen aesthetics and it seems absolutely self-evident to me that when women have a choice, a lot of them will go for young and thin and tall and winsome and well groomed with nice, flowing hair. And the mere possibility of this dismayed a lot of competitive-minded men, because suddenly the body type that impresses other guys has little to do with the body type that "all" women supposedly fantasize about. How offensive and unthinkable to consider a world where football players and marines might lose out to less alpha looking dudes. That's what I hear behind a lot of the conservative panic about effeminacy in manga. Because after decades of the media presenting one thing they assured us all women found attractive, women could get something radically different from somewhere else, and suddenly these houses of cards about women being "less visual" and "less sexual" and the rest toppled.
