I like the idea of a character liking another character purely based on personality but I have yet to see it actually written in a believable way, regardless of gender

It always falls back on the "ugly" one being Nice or kind in a generic, boring way that literally any decent person would be, with no reason for the hero/heroine to go for that person over the millions of other pretty decent human beings that must exist in the world even if everyone single other named character in the story is suspiciously and rather unbelievably an asshole just to make the plain one stand out

Really would rather drop the generic Nice Guy/Girl drivel and have the ugly or plain one be badass and command respect. Too bad Jamie Lannister/Brienne of Tarth wasn't endgame

I personally like the trope of hot/ugly-or-average, but I kind of get it. This is the same reason I can't get into Otome/dating sim games, even if I imagine a character on it instead of me.

i mean...idk men go for a wide variety of women when they have affairs, i have to believe it's minimally realistic that they can fall in love with a wide variety of women too, especially since stories don't have to follow statistical probability.

like...is there are reason you're generalizing the people in the story? must stories follow average human behavior/social standards? can we get any stories about people 3 standard deviations away?

I feel like it's easier to accept both types of pairings if you move away from the thinking that you can objectively rank attractiveness, and that people of equal attractiveness should/usually end up together.

While it's tempting to simplify attraction like that, that's not really how it works when you get into the details for individuals. If you start thinking of attraction at an individual level, where each person has a type or types they're attracted to that are a combination of genetics, chemistry and individual idiosyncrasies, it's easier to see how a person someone ends up with might be incredibly attractive to them, but not be at the same level of socially acceptable attractiveness.

TBH I think the more we tell ugly woman/hot guy stories it might actually start to feel more reflective IRL.

I think carrying the attitude OP has on this trope ("I can't believe it because I don't see it IRL") further allows the stereotype that men are visually more shallow than women to thrive.

Did I make this secret in my sleep? I am the exact same, even down to sadly never ~quite~ scratching that itch and avoiding the kpop stuff. The funny thing is I've noticed a pattern - whenever I notice myself doing it it means I'm about a week out from getting my period. Best most consistent but weird indicator I've got, since I'm super irregular.

I don't see Spy x Family really going the way of Buddy Daddies (unless I'm misunderstanding the secret) because I've been reading the manga and it doesn't really lean in that direction IMO. But I also have great hopes for season two of SK8 lol

Transcript: I'm actually very interested in what will happen when it comes to using AI as a tool for art/writing/etc. Note that I say as a TOOL, not as something that will replace artists. I tend to think of AI as a sort of combination of a sampler and a drum machine - it both is designed for preexisting material and can be programmed to create a variety of things from a certain databank. I'm fairly certain that, once the laws surrounding AI catch up with the technology, the rules will be somewhat similar to sampling laws - the end result will have to a) be opt-in both for the AI's databank and whatever material is published, b) credit whatever material is being "sampled" by the AI, and c) have a system to compensate the sample sources.

Of course, my interest in what artists will do with a new tool in their toolbox runs DIRECTLY against my issues with the way that sampling and plagerism laws have been interpreted, especially in recent years :/
