Motorcycle question

(Anonymous) 2023-07-28 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
What types of bikes did they ride in the 50s and 60s in England? Did anybody ride the German or Japanese bikes then, or were the war wounds still too raw?

Re yesterday's floor plan secret

(Anonymous) 2023-07-28 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone know a free online resource for drawing floor plans or even exteriors? I'm trying to get one for a Queen Anne style gilded age mansion in a story I'm writing. My visual imagination is shot, so I need an external aid.

I just saw one posted in the Our Old House Facebook group in the last day or two. It’s a public group so you would be able to see it.

These look interesting, and they're free.....

Also, if you just want a floor plan, googling your chosen house style (Queen Anne) + floorplan will get you quite a few.

3rd places

(Anonymous) 2023-07-28 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I just heard a thing about "third places" - places that are not home and not your work or school, but a third place where you spend time and build bonds and meet people etc. And I realized I've never had a place like that. So now I'm curious - what are your third places?

……………fandom?

Well, that used to be it. Nowadays… still fandom but to a lesser extent. If you mean physical places - cons. But mostly online spaces.
But lately I haven’t been going outside AT ALL, so, nowhere.

Farmer's market, park, friend's house, restaurant, camping sites, library.

I quit going to most of these during covid but I've been creeping back.

I don’t have one in my current city but the dog park was my third place in a previous town.

Here I take my dogs on a hiking trail and we do run into other people sometimes but rarely the same ones more than once or twice. Usually we don’t see anyone at all because I take them just after the morning regulars clear out. We can see the little parking area from home so I don’t take them if there are cars there. It could be a third place for me but I don’t like being around anyone else when I’m in the woods, they always talk and spoil the peace of nature.

Cons, I guess. I've met some cool people while waiting hours to enter a panel. I used to meet people while camping out at concerts to get a good view in the pit, but people in line seem less inclined to talk these days.

When I was younger there were clubs, movie theatres and shopping malls.
Also, online fan forums. When I was young I frequented various US celebrity, various sports and a few kpop fan forums from about 2002-2014.

These days, IRL shopping malls aren't like what I grew up on so for me, it's been more like walking outdoors in small cities where they tend to have shopping centers with restaurants, etc.
I don't socialize a lot, it's more to get out and just enjoy the outdoors and doing things by myself.

Being out and about, I have to constantly remind myself to take on the small efforts of giving our random compliments when I want to give them out, say hello to people, thank people for seemingly random shit that I do want to thank them for (I thanked the gas station attendant for being open on July 4th when I went there to buy ice I forgot to get while on my way to my parents' house for a BBQ).
Sometimes I invite a friend or family member to go out and that is fun too.

All these things I worked up the courage to do after realizing and accepting that I am lonely and I don't do a lot of things to invite people to talk to me or to even "know" that I am someone worthy of discussion with/someone you van simply smile and say hi to.
One small step at a time.

For example, I was on a solo trip out of town and some of my best conversations on the trip were with some of my Uber drivers.
One them was an older man talking about his life in the city. Another was a guy about my age, got a little flirty (which was gratifying NGL and it didn't go anywhere uncomfortable so my anxiety didn't go wild).

I know not everyone is seeking for things like this when they're outside, but IMO, when I began thinking harder on 3rd spaces I realized what little 3rd spaces I have access to now and actually want to be in, I have to cultivate my community. It won't just be a community that thrives when I walk into it, if that makes sense?

Not to say, again, that anyone should do what I do, but just know that a lot of us are suffering socially because 3rd spaces aren't necessarily promoted to be that and if someone wants to engage a little more I'm here to say, I think you're really cool and brave for giving it a try! Just saying hi to a stranger or complimenting the cashier's nails is a small but important part of giving credence to a 3rd space =)

In terms of social media, NGL I am more or less giving it up as a significant 3rd space for me. The places I visit are either gone, gone to shit (hi Twitter) or were never really spaces I enjoyed being in (hi Instagram). The only real online 3rd space I still enjoy is literally here on Fandom Secrets and I don't engage every day. Sometimes I go weeks/months not on here.

And honestly, maybe it's my age, maybe it's because I think the internet as I knew it is dead, but I get more enjoyment just doing things IRL than shitposting online these days.

Admittedly my main 3rd place is a writing website (Writing.com). However, due to my city advisory activities, thebpublic works building is inadvertently becoming a 3rd place.

General commiserations and sympathy thread.

Well, I just relauzed I am way more accidentally misanthropic than I thought thanks to the third places thread. I literally have never had a place like that. I either met people via school or work. And now that I have a very solo career I just....don't meet people. And that realization makes me sad.

Your favorite hot/hot, hot/ugly, and-or ugly/ugly ships?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-28 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Inspired by 1#. No need to have a ship to each of these, but it's more fun if you have at least a ship to two of the tropes.

*Not ugly but also not hot, average, can count for this. but it's up to you.

Sort of hot/ugly and ugly/ugly(aka average/average)
