I recall avoiding slash fics for the longest time because I thought they were horror fics ('slash' like 'slasher movie,' of course) and I didn't get why they were so popular. I think the first one I ever read was a Zelgadis/Xellos Slayers fic.

Aww, SAME. I thought "slash" meant that a character was going to die.

I'll never forget, first slashfic I ever stumbled across was Enjolras/Grantaire, Les Mis. I didn't really get into slash until the LOTR movies hit big. An early encounter with "They Say of the Elves" (https://archiveofourown.org/works/3802358) helped win me over, loooong before AO3 existed!

First encounter with fanfic in general was with Phantom of the Opera. (Yeah, I was, and still am, a musical theatre geek)
