I don't know if you'd be interested, but there's a tumblr account that's taking in old icons including livejournal icons to post up in a collection. I got in contact with them once to send them my own collection of anime LJ icons a while ago through google docs.

Loving that tumblr. Wish I'd known it existed when I was trawling photobucket for icons to add to my collection. I was looking for very specific things and trying to fill a limited number of icon slots (without turning my computer memory into a treasure trove of tiny pics that deligted me once but I would never use). And ... that's fine, but my brain insists that I should still be able to go back and look at any of that again if I want to, while photobucket keeps finding excuses to dump bazillions of old pictures.

I have WAAAAAY more than 750 icons, ha! I collect them as miniature works of art, fandom, humor, whatever. I get the nostalgia can be painful but I still love my collection.

I still use icons. TBH I have a paid dreamwidth account just so I can use icons, even though I'm rarely on any journal but this one. Icons are fun.

"I have just under 750 icons on my hard drive. All of them since day one of Livejournal. Some were made for me, some were made by me, some were found on icon comms or posts.

I used to curate and switch them around and use them ALL THE TIME. Almost every comment had a different icon to go along with it.
I even remember when you could carry on an entire conversation just by choosing a new icon in your reply. It was so fucking fun.

Now I'm thinking about just deleting them all and it makes me really sad, but... its just not the same any more."

I completely agree with this, I used to PAY on LJ to have extra icons, just so I could have all the icons!, and I used to spend hours and hours MAKING icons, but these days I mostly don't even bother changing my icon to something else on the comment/post, because icons don't seem to have the same feel to them here. I can't even find many active icon communities on DW (theres a couple, but its not like it used to be).

Photobucket suddenly turning around to charge hundreds and then blocking the image links probably didn't help. Image hosting was essentially the thing that was the backbone to LJ and although be have things like Imgur, its not been known to be as reliable as the early years with photobucket.

From what I've seen from some still active icon makers, trying to find somewhere reliable has been a challenge.
