What vitriol did she get? It's been so long the only thing I remember were people hating a "Mary Sue" type character/people thought she just wasn't interesting/felt flat acting and character wise.

Yeah I'm not even sure what OP means by "gender non-conforming" in this case either because there really isn't anything like that about her? Unless they're just talking "female character with her own goals and initiatives" and even that isn't uncommon these days.

nayrt - Same. I watched it years ago and haven't rewatched it since then, so I don't really remember anything standing out. If OP means "gender non-conforming" in the Hollywood sense, i.e. "female lead who doesn't wear dresses and does action stuff instead of getting married and popping out babies" gender non-conforming. That's pretty damn mainstream and I wouldn't consider that non-conforming.

da - Yeah, I'm confused about this, too. But the movie wasn't interesting enough to hang around fandom and find out what people had to say about what seemed (to me) like insipid star wars heroes / heroines.

NA - Yeah, I was wondering about that myself. I really, really liked Rogue One, but it's too sad to rewatch, so I've only seen it once and am like, did I forget something about her character? She's scrappy and distrustful, but that's not gender non-conforming. She also really doesn't want to die for a good cause, which maybe goes sliiiightly against the stereotype of heroic women just naturally prioritizing the well-being of others, but even that honestly feels like a pretty big stretch.
