What vitriol did she get? It's been so long the only thing I remember were people hating a "Mary Sue" type character/people thought she just wasn't interesting/felt flat acting and character wise.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-29 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I'm not even sure what OP means by "gender non-conforming" in this case either because there really isn't anything like that about her? Unless they're just talking "female character with her own goals and initiatives" and even that isn't uncommon these days.

Is that Diego Luna?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-29 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's him as Cassian Andor in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (pictured with Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso). And, as the secret mentions, he's also in Andor, a streaming series on Disney+. It has a 12-episode first season and was filming the second season, but then, you know, strike.

That character is considered a gender non-conforming woman? I guess it's been a while since I watched Rogue One, but I don't really recall that being a big Thing. I didn't care for her because I thought the character was a bit flat and the acting even flatter. IMO, a better actress might've helped save it. The rest of the movie didn't really do it for me, either. Great concept, and I liked the supporting characters and their potential, but they didn't get much time and development and then of course... it ends depressingly. I didn't hate it, but it's not a rewatch for me.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
A better actress wouldn't have saved it for you, because you require traumatized people to dance for you like puppets.

Yeah. I think a lot of people felt like this about Rogue One.

Anon, I'm gender non-conforming as fuck and a woman, and I've never felt like a freak. With and without movies. Maybe you need better friends. Maybe you need good stories about other real people who don't fit the stereotypes.

So any woman who wears pants, is competent, is physically capable, and is a good leader is now gender nonconforming? I'm sad for you, OP, and your really narrow vision of what being a woman can be.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Right? Like, hell, I'm in the middle of watching a Cdrama right now and it's full of women exactly like that. Even the women who are still traditionally feminine fit those standards.

Depends on the audience.

And, going by some of the comments I was seeing a week or so ago, some of that audience is right here.

How is she gender nonconforming?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-29 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't get that from her at all. Anyone want to educate me?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-29 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
What are you even talking about?
queenslayerbee: Isabelle Adjany as Lucy Harker in 1979's "Nosferatu the Vampire". She's surrounded by darkness, looking over her shoulder while she wears a white nightgown and a cross as a necklace. A hand with long nails like a claw is reaching for her neck from the darkness behind her. (Default)

People are harping on the gnc comment, and yeah, idk that I'd call her that, but. TBF to op, people on twitter were freaking out over Peach wearing hot pink pants in that Mario film and saying it's a sign women "can't be feminine" anymore or some other tradcath bullshit. Those kinds of people 300% would consider no-makeup, unkempt-hair, dark-non-form-fitting clothes Jyn gnc as hell, let's be honest here.

But I'm getting the impression op's complaining about how much flack she got in fandom supposedly for not being an ~ideologue/all in for The Cause like Cassian... all to make Cassian exactly like that in Andor while most people ate it up, from what I've heard about the show. IF that's what op meant, I agree that said side of the fandom was irksome. And tbh Andor's writing choice itself annoys me, because I personally think each character in the pair and where they fell on the spectrum of rebels against the empire was what made the film.

Are those people in part 1 stuck in the 1950's or something? Where have they been for the last 60+ years, women have been wearing pants for a long-ass time. Hell women have been wearing pants for longer than a lot of people think, it just wasn't for fashion further back. But yeesh I always wonder if those types are just a very loud minority online because I never encounter that shit irl, no one cares if women aren't 'feminine' or whatever.

But yeah the second part could be what OP means. I only poked around on the fringes of R1 fandom and the sheer amount of hate she got was insane. Like she was selfish and only looked out for herself, the film did not gloss over this or consider it anything other than a mindset she needed to see past, but because it made her 'unlikeable'(a death sentence to female characters in fandom) she was The Devil. I don't care if people think she's boring or whatever, YMMV, it's the very specific flack she got for being a flawed character in a movie about flawed characters that was especially irritating. (I can't speak for the show as I haven't seen it).

How is she gender nonconforming?

She didn’t get any hate per se, fandom and general audiences bitched about her having no character whatsoever. It was a shame because Jinn could and should have been absolutely amazing. But there was just nothing there to connect with and literally anything else on the screen with her eclipsed her big time, didn’t even have to be other characters.

She did get a lot of vitriol but I don't think it was anything to do with being GNC, because she's not. It was to do with being a female character in Star Wars, and, in particular, a female character who did anything other than a) be in a romance and b) uncomplicatedly heroic.

I love both their characters, personally, and for pretty similar reasons.

I do love Cassian more, that much is true--mainly because as good as I think the writing on Rogue One is, IMO the writing on Andor is an order of magnitude better. Also, R1 is what, two hours? Whereas Andor is...*googles*...eight hours. There's four times as much time to establish the character and build his character arc--and eight times as much time if you count the future S2. But Jyn is also a really good character, IMO. And while Felicity Jones' flattened affect in the role is a bit of an acquired taste, I ultimately thought it worked well for the character.

Also, while Cassian may not get the hate Jyn apparently got (I wasn't in R1 fandom), there has been a fair bit of talk among Andor fans about Andor being one of the weaker characters in the series. I don't personally agree with this perspective, but I can see why some people feel this way about his character. Now obviously, people seeing him as one of the weaker characters (in a show full of strong characters) isn't the same as people shitting on his character relentlessly, but well, that's sexism for you. *shrug*

(I don't really see how Jyn is gender non-conforming, but I didn't want to make that the focus of my comment.)

Reading these comments has made me feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

Tumblr fandom hated Jyn, and still hates her, for daring to talk back to the men. They aren't upset that she's "flat;" they're upset that she dared to get mad at Cassian for betraying her. They mock her for being upset about watching her father die. They say she's a racist and an ungrateful cunt. They say that while it's "commendable" she died to steal and transmit the Death Star plans, that deed can't wipe out the unforgivable sin of saying, "it's not a problem if you don't look up."

I don't know about GNC, but I do know that she is absolutely hated as some kind of poster child for the evils of White Feminism by people who forgive Cassian every sin they pin on her.

for places online where fandom is regularly hateful of GNC (or "GNC," whatever. Let's go with whatever level of GNC-or-not that Jyn is) female characters. It doesn't sound hard to miss from the way y'all talk, but here I am missing it by miles.

I'm not going to go to the links and start participating in any discussions or discourse, I've just become genuinely curious.

hmm, i think this has more to do with how writers write traumatized or non-emotional characters and how audiences read them. i think it is gendered but complicatedly. men do absolutely get this criticism, but it tends to happen when that's the natural state of actor (a la Neo and Keanu) but maybe not the natural state of the writing, whereas for women I think the criticism comes when it's either the writing or the natural style of the actor (a la Katniss, who people criticized as a flat character even in the books). Although I will say that in writing I think it is significantly less gendered because unfortunately it seems like that's a function of POV characters where they are flatter than the people they observe.

i also would not call jyn gnc, especially not internally to the movie wherein all female rebellion fighters are dressed and act similarly, nor externally where we expect female fighters to be dressed and to act similarly to male ones.
