She did get a lot of vitriol but I don't think it was anything to do with being GNC, because she's not. It was to do with being a female character in Star Wars, and, in particular, a female character who did anything other than a) be in a romance and b) uncomplicatedly heroic.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
This, pretty much.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I'm not in the Star Wars Fandom, then. I really like her and I enjoyed that movie a lot. Vitriol would have made me sad and angry.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
...dude you just listed how she's gender non-conforming.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT - That's not GNC, that's fictional-stereotype nonconforming. They're not the same thing.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
They're exactly the same thing. Gender is stereotypes! Gender is socially imposed roles.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
They're not, but you have fun with your simplistic conflating of two moderately complex concepts.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

They are. That's what it means for gender to be a social construct.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
da

"gender is stereotypes" and "fiction has stereotypes" does not mean they're the same stereotypes or that challenging one challenges both.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I didn't want to waste my limited remaining energy for the day putting this into words, but you said it better (and more succinctly) than I probably would've anyway.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
That's not even gender non-conforming unless we're talking female characters from like, maybe 30 years ago.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
It's absolutely gender non-conforming. People still do not think female characters should be that way, which is why the female-led projects of the past several years have gotten so much flack.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
We must be consuming very different media, then, because I can list off at least two dozen female characters from recent media who are exactly that way.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

I didn't say that recent media lacked that type of female character. I said that recent media has gotten flack for having that type of female character.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't seen that either but keep living in that world where everyone hates female characters, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

And you keep living in a world where you don't have to address a problem because you can just tell yourself it's not one. Men aren't talking about how women shouldn't be allowed to vote, because you haven't personally seen it! Therefore, it's not an issue.

NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I can't help but wonder if the vocal handful of people in fandom trying hard to push the narrative that every female character who isn't a 1950s housewife stereotype is met with inescapable vitriol is a new stealth radfem tactic. Radfems have mask-off admitted that they intentionally plant their ideology in fandom in subtle ways in order to recruit young people to their belief system.

Re: NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my gods. I just feel so hopeless! You get told over and over and over again that NO this isn't really happening, it's never happened, no one could ever have said or done that, you're just doing this for attention, and so on and so on, and all I want to do is curl up in a ball and die.

"You're just a radfem trying to recruit people." No. No, I married a man. I don't hate men. I don't hate men! My gods, I just want to die. I can get abused over, and over, and over again and no one will listen, no one will believe me. They don't care what happens to you. They don't care what's said to you, or to other women. If you try to talk about it, then it's because you have some sort of agenda. It can't be honest.

A woman can be abused, and if she brings it up in court, they cite "parental alienation" and give her kids to her abuser. Is that okay? Why does everyone think it's okay? Why does everyone think it's some kind of agenda if it's brought up?

Why does everyone pretend that everything is fine? Yes, we've made progress, but that doesn't mean that everything is fine. Yes, other people are discriminated against and need support, but that doesn't mean that there's no longer any need to support women. Why are we okay with women being raped and abused? Why?

I am not okay. I want to die.

different anon

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
i'm sorry anons here are being assholes and dismissing you as a "radfem troll" because they're uncomfortable with someone who has different experiences than them. anons have gotten quite toxic lately, to the point that they create paranoid conspiracy theories around a harmless fandom secret. i wish it wasn't this way and i hope you won't take their stupid comments to heart. hoping you find peace and healing.

Re: different anon

AYRT

Thank you anon. I am probably not being my best with how upset I am, either, but it all feels very hopeless, especially here in a discussion that's ultimately about gender roles. I do not think people have moved as far past those roles as they imagine.

Re: NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly feel like no one will ever be able to win with female characters. Either you have women tearing them to shreds because they're not "perfect" or you have women jumping on you like rabid dogs for pointing out legitimate writing issues with a female character (as in, they set the character up for what could have been a great character arc that was all about HER instead of about a man and then threw it out the window in favor of making her the Love Interest instead).

No one hates female characters more than women, and it's honestly sad.

Re: NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
No, anon, no one actually hates any female characters! Women certainly don't! People here have NEVER seen that. Ever. It's all just a radfem plot to turn young, impressionable girls into ideologues.

Re: NAYRT

Nah. Having to deal with inappropriate, underhanded men tends to put women on friendly terms with feminism. Convoluted tricks are not needed.

The joke "I became a feminist as an alternative to becoming a masochist" is really as relevant as ever.

Re: NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2023-07-30 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
You think you're being sarcastic, but it's basically true. There has been absolutely no evidence of disproportionate dislike for female characters in female-dominated fandom spaces since the early 2000's. Assertions that everyone hates female characters and uncritically loves male characters (as if any mention of a Kylo Ren or Loki doesn't quickly become rife with fighting over whether or not he's a horrible toxic male that nobody should like) are simply not true.
