I think you're absolutely right in that it's more of an issue of people not liking characters who have realistic responses to trauma than a gender thing, because I've seen loads of male characters get flak for exactly that as well. Someone up above mentioned Shinji from Evangelion and that's a perfect example of a traumatized male character being disliked for being affected by what he went through. I've also seen a lot of criticism of Noctis from FFXV for being "flat" even though that's also the result of having experienced trauma as a child.
