Stupid question

(Anonymous) 2023-08-02 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I've got a blockage in my ear. Can my primary doctor deal with that, or should I go to urgent care? difference between $30 copay and $100.

best to get it checked by a doctor first. I had a blocked ear about a month ago and it turned out I had a bulging ear drum.

Pretty sure it is just really compacted wax. But it has reached the point of pain and vertigo, so I figure I need it checked.

Primary. If you aren't in pain, you're fine and probably just need it flushed.

Some pain, not severe, but vertigo and ringing.

I've had a lot of ear infections, I'd see a doctor if you're getting vertigo.

Seconding this. When I had it happen, all they needed to do was clean out the ear and I was fine.

If it's impacted earwax, then I'd try your primary doctor first. He/she might be able to flush it out for you, which will be uncomfortable but a big relief. I'm not sure this is an urgent care issue unless your pain or other symptoms are severe and you can't get an appointment with your regular doctor soon.

In the meantime, have you tried Debrox ear drops and an ear syringe? Don't use q-tips, that'll likely just make the problem worse by packing the earwax in further.

It is always a solid "maybe" with these things. Go to the cheapest one first, unless there is a free clinic near you and you can spare six hours waiting to be seen, and take it from there. With ear blockages, they sometimes don't even do anything at all and just tell you to take a hot bath if it is heavy ear wax, and let the hot water melt it. Get it seen to, but do it as cheap as you can first. You can always step up to the more expensive one later.
