(Anonymous) 2023-08-04 03:27 am (UTC)(link)I keep hearing people assert this on F!S and in fandom spaces in general, but I interacted with many Japanese college students, grad students, and teachers when I was in university, and all of them were on the really white side of the skin color spectrum. This was not at Ivy League schools or in especially large, fashionable cities. So I'm skeptical of this repeated assertion that "oh, most Japanese people do not really look like that". Tt seems like an attempt to assert that anyone who was born outside of western Europe, the US, or settler Australia is some shade of brown. Which might simplify "whiteness" discourse, but oversimplifies reality.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-04 04:21 am (UTC)(link)I'd certainly believe there's variation, and might keep that in mind for creative character redesigns in fanart. But foreigner's impressions that the Japanese can be very white is not a stereotype from anime. People can get exactly that same idea just from interacting with students and expats.
