They've seen people tag to specify that in their story, Israel Hands was born male, and identifies as a guy. Because the OFMD fandom apparently has so many stories where he's Female-to-Male (FtM) trans.

Yes, I know the facts of the situation. I was expressing my shock at this fandom because I'm a fandom old and, goddamnit, canon should be assumed unless tagged otherwise.

Ah, sorry. And yeah, I think you have a solid point about that.

canon should be assumed unless tagged otherwise.

So you agree it should be assumed that all characters with no stated sexual orientation in canon are straight unless tagged otherwise?

That doesn't follow.

If canon's got a man portraying a man, and in a fic that character had to go against what everyone else thought they were to identify as a man, the author has significantly changed them: both their body and their history.

"No stated sexual orientation" is a canon absence, a silence, not fanon blatantly contradicting canon.

I'd argue that the ship tag, that tells you that in this story these two guys are hooking up ARE telling you that this character is likely not straight.

LMAO yep +1, that is a very very clear indicator

Me: We're all fans of this show, so the easiest way of tagging fic is when deviating from the baseline of the show

You: So you think everyone in the QUEER SHOW(tm) is straight unless tagged otherwise?

Me: Wow. Your reading comprehension is piss poor.

I had not seen that reference, and you made me lol. Great response.
