TLJ is my favorite too, nonny. And I saw in real time the BNFs such as Rebel Force Radio and Star Wars Theory going from loving TLJ to being browbeaten into hating on it.

Or maybe they felt compelled to first say they loved it just to spite the haters and after a while noticed "you know what, it's really not a great movie".

Especially since when it came out if you said you didn't like it then people would scream that you were a racist misogynist. It was pretty toxic the way people didn't like it were treated, as if that was the only reason that could have been given for not liking it.

Yeah, it's always "oh the mean olden fans who hate this movie are evil hater bullies" when a lot of the stans acted just as horribly towards anyone who didn't like it.

"It was pretty toxic the way people who didn't like liked it were treated."

Fixed.

Nah, the people who didn't like it for non-sexist/racist reasons were treated like shit too. Stop pretending your side was some sort of saintly righteous community of wholesomeness because fun fact, it wasn't.

"It was trash and destroyed the franchise and its fans are stupid dumbdumbs" has been the very loud and dominant opinion in fandom spaces for the last 5 years, and not very politely or respectfully couched

(Anonymous) 2023-08-06 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
And that means... every other opinion is just part of it? Not to mention "everyone who doesn't love this masterpiece of modern cinema is an evil sexist racist bigot not exceptions" isn't exactly the most polite or respectful reaction either.

DA I agree that that argument is a pile of shit but it's definitely nowhere near as prevalent as the other one.

It is true that there was enormous toxicity on all sides in fandom around this movie.

It is also true that one side has been absolutely dominant in terms of being loud and having their voices heard in the years since the movie was released. If there were people who were saying that disliking TLJ was racist and misogynist, they all got chased out of fandom pretty quick. People who liked TLJ learned to play quietly with their toys and not engage with the rest of fandom. That's the way that it played out. Whatever toxicity existed from TLJ-likers at the time of release, it's totally ridiculous to act like that justifies the massive hate-boner vocal parts of fandom had for the movie the second it came out and have maintained ever since.

Thanks for making my point, you toxic jackass.

AYRT

No...there were no haters at the time. It was literally their "just walked out of the theater" love of the movie.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-06 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, I've had movies I liked directly after watching and after getting the opportunity to think about it for a while it didn't really hold up and I thought it kinda sucked. (See also the other secret with the lovely term fridge logic.)
People are allowed to and capable of changing their opinions, no weird "the haters held them at gunpoint and made them do it" conspiracy theories needed.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-06 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Let me put this all together in one comment.

I saw in real time the BNFs such as Rebel Force Radio and Star Wars Theory going from loving TLJ to being browbeaten into hating on it. There was no pressure on them by TLJ defenders to be positive about the movie when they saw it. It was literally their "just walked out of the theater" love of the movie.
It was only after their watchers/listeners overwhelmed them with negative feedback for their positive reviews of TLJ that they turned into the negative fandom forces that they are today.
