Sure, he made the choice, but it was a random choice that didn't make sense given the earlier film. Most of the film is making clear he's becoming disillusioned by the dark side as well as highlighting his attraction to the light. He's obviously being set up to have a redemption arc in movie 3. But this is TLJ, which means "subverting expectations" at any cost (plus I guess they had to shove that "you can't save everyone" lesson in there too). So suddenly he's fully evil with no redeeming qualities whatsoever and the film is happily pretending the earlier character development never happened.

I don't think he was disillusioned with the dark side. I think he was disillusioned with Snoke and the way Snoke abused him and wanted to be free to make his own decisions. He used Rey to challenge Snoke because he genuinely thought he could sway Rey to the dark. But he wasn't turning light, he was taking charge and throwing off anything that he saw as a hindrance to himself and his own power.

He...had redeeming qualities?
