I feel vaguely similar. I don't much care for the show. The movie was better, but it when I watched it I couldn't help but think of it like a Senior Project. It felt unpolished, on almost every level. Still better than the show.

It generally helps the franchise a lot to keep up the pace so we get all the cool stuff and not the annoying bits in between. Like for instance hanging around with Mal. God what a prick.

I'm the opposite I prefer the show and just don't consider the movie canon haha

I like neither, but I still love my Serenity-T-Shirt that I bought because it looks great (before knowing the show or the movie). I'm still wearing the shirt. Haven't been gate-keeped (gate-kept?) for it yet. Probably because I don't hang around in the fandom (any fandom) anymore.
