What are we actually fighting for?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-10 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Is it for people to be free to live the lives they want to live, or is it to have the opportunity to take revenge?

Is it for the chance to be on top ourselves, and to be able to make our own preferences into law, and to punish anyone who prefers something different?

Is it the nature of the structure that bothers us, or is it the fact that we are not on top? Would we actually be fine with the structure if it allowed us to carry out our whims, and to bully those we dislike? Do we crave power because it would lend legitimacy to our own violent impulses?

I have become a pessimist. I don't think there is actually such a thing as punching down, because all humans desire to dominate and subjugate. The Struggle is solely about who gets to do so at the present moment.

I empathize with tending towards a pessimistic outlook, but I also have an empirical streak.

“all humans desire to dominate and subjugate”

Any actual rigorous evidence for this? Or just feelings and anecdotes?

Entire human history wigh vanishingly few exceptions.

"Certain types of people have always existed" =/= "all humans who have ever existed are that way and are just waiting for their chance to act in that manner back"

I mean, I don't want to dominate or subjugate anyone. I want to be left alone to do my thing and I want other people to be left alone to do their thing. I do think people who seek power enjoy having power with all that entails, but that doesn't mean that everyone you meet is like that. For example: I have met a lot of medical staff who love having power over others and I have suffered from that; I have met a lot of medical staff who just can't be bothered and I have suffered from that; I have also met a lot of medical staff who genuinely want to help people or at least do their job properly and I have benefited from that.

I think most people just want to live their lives, and probably would get along, or at least respect certain boundaries, if not for a handful of individuals (who believe that life is a zero sum game and wish for all of us to be in the constant negative) constantly trying to pit everyone against each other. We won't always agree on things, and that's fine. But there should be some common ground we can find that doesn't involve intentionally stepping on someone else. As long as you're aware of yourself and how you affect others, and are willing to check yourself and empathize with the other person in spite of your upbringing and past experiences, there's hope.

To not believe that punching down exists is sad. It shows a lack of compassion. If you crave power because you see yourself as nothing more than a mindless machine who can't resist the need to dominate others, then I don't know what to say. Except that I hope you think better of yourself and others.

I hear ya. But for me add in the pointlessness of it all. Models that match the rate of climate change we're seeing (not the IPCC) show we're past the point of no return and agriculture is going to fail in 10 years. By the end of the century, average temperatures will have risen 10 degrees. Meaning everything and everyone is going to die.

Good job, humanity.

It's a very rare person that would not stomp on a human face once the boot is on that other foot, it's true. Humans are much more similar in our narcissism than we like to think.

I admit I'm fighting for the end of extreme, binary thinking. This means butting heads against both toxic positivity and extreme pessimism. I don't really care for either of those cognitive biases and live for occupying the space between.

I have no interest in subjugating anybody.
