That's not why he was driven out, and also the show lasted a long while after he left, and also panel shows have a natural lifespan where at some point the format and the personnel have been thoroughly explored and there's nothing new there and it's better to cancel the show than to turn into HIGNFY.

HIGNFY has its flaws, but Mock the Week hadn’t made a political point in years when it ended.

Yeah, look at what happened to the original run of Buzzcocks for a prime example. By the time the show got to Rhod Gilbert, it was unrecognisable as they tried to correct perceived problems with the format. I really hated what they did to the Next Lines round in particular, but the whole vibe of the show by that point was just weird and off-putting because it had a reputation they were desperately trying to run away from.

I've been really enjoying the revival (the first series was weird, but I think covid bore a lot of the blame for making things needlessly clunky, tbh), and am looking forward to the next series starting up later this month. But at the same time I'm a strong believer in dropping the axe on shows once they've outlived their own format. If it gets weird again, I'd rather see Sky pull the plug early than keep it on life support for ten series longer than necessary.

Was he actually driven out?

I hadn't heard that, nor have I gotten any impression besides him leaving voluntarily. Boyle himself said that it was fun and the guys were great, but he was bored and felt it was time to do something else.

Data gave an interview once where he said Frankie was asked to leave because his style of humor meant they couldn't riff such. Boyle would come in with a very funny, but also very savage, line that cut the jokes short. It couldn't be topped, so had to be stopped, and Dennis style of humour was more a dialogue based riffing, so they were incompatible.

I can't remember who it was, but just before he left I think he got in trouble for describing someone looking like a horse or the back of a spoon.

let's be honest - all the bbc panel shows have sucked since the dumb "there must be at least one woman on every episode" mandate

jo brand will never ever be funny

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Jo Brand is very funny and you are a prick

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
she is not and yes i am

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Only if you interpreted it as having only one woman on them.

Found the Tory.

Jo Brand is hilarious. And Mock the Week improved greatly after Andy Parsons left and Angela Barnes joined up.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
andy parsons was absolute shite though (his delivery was so awful you got to the punch line about half an hour before he did)

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
That joke in the secret is fucking funny.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's a controversial opinion, but Frankie Boyle is and was really fucking funny. But some of his jokes definitely came close to crossing the line and I don't think he always punched down, per se. But Mock the Week did lose something when he left and it took them a while to come back. They did, though.

Yeah Frankie Boyle is a funny guy. And some of his jokes are also fucked up, especially the ableist ones and the ones about rape, and it's not good that he made them.

Oh, sure.

The fourteen seasons after his seven were just the show lingering on.

Quantity is not synonymous with quality.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
I have never understood this stance and I like Frankie Boyle. It's like his fanboys have wrongly deitified him because they thing he's this icon against "wokeness" without realising that he's pretty left leaning.

And it's not as though other comedians on the show didn't also make offensive jokes long after Frankie had left.
