Fandom can contain activism, and minorities like myself appreciate when it does.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It can contain it, but it is not inherent to what fandom is. Fandom is a hobby. Don't be a dick and you're fine.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly, don't be a dick, make the effort to be more inclusive instead.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
No. I'm here to relax. I'm not WORKING here. I'm not going to be a dick to anyone, but I'm not going to "make an effort" to do anything other than what brings me joy or helps me relax.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Dick.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Dicks do bring me joy, it's why I'm in m/m fandoms. BEING a dick does not bring anyone joy, which is why I don't go over to the het side of fandom and yell that they're horrible people for not being activists by including gay rights in their fandom.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Seems to be bring you something, the effort you are putting in to defending your ability to be one

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I would heartily suggest you sit with the idea that when a person says "I'm not going to be mean to anyone, I'm going to be over here doing my thing" the first thing that comes to your mind is "dick". Do you think that all people who don't cater to you are horrible people? Have you seen a therapist about this? You must have an awful time out in the world with that kind of expectation.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Or, different OP here, just let people enjoy what they want to enjoy?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Nobody owes you inclusivity in their personal fandom activities, cry about it.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
+10000

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
And minorities like me wish it wouldn't.

I'm in fandom to relax.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-13 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
DA

But so much this. Might be nice if there was a way to write "this individual does not represent the rest of us, you are not doing me a favor by catering to their shit-fits" on some of the fans who belong to the same minorities as me, but take that as license to claim anywhere that doesn't name and welcome them "enough" must be harboring dangerous bigots. Because I'm sick of them sowing discord like that.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes but there's also room for reasonable disagreement about whether telling people it's wrong to be in Harry Potter fandom under any circumstances is a useful form of activism

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is what that comment is. It's not activism to tell people their fandom is inherently evil. It's being an asshole. Because fandom is not activism. People are here to share their love, not to be browbeaten about it.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes a fandom is. Sadly, thanks to Jo herself claiming its existence validates her views, Potter has crossed that line . Just because you like something does notean that something is a good thing to be.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-11 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I love how this always is about Harry Potter and not, say, slasher films, or true crime, exploitation films, horror movies, etc etc.

"You like a book about children going to a magical school and there is a widely known literary concept called Death of the Author where a piece of literature can be viewed divorced from the creator?

You're a horrible human being and you should be shamed for the things you like."

How very conservative of you.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-12 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Bingo!
HP does not have any transphobia in the text itself, so people can easily divorce JK's opinions from the text of the novels.

DA

Exactly. The only red flag here, for me, is when people make sweeping, irresponsible assertions that liking "the wrong story" is proof of moral degeneracy. That behavior tells me the OP's judgement about what's worth trying to punish and ostracize other people for is really unsound. And that they're keen to have reasons to malign fellow fans - perhaps in the future, any old excuse will serve.
