I really like Burnham but yeah, it was an odd choice and it wasn't needed. They could have had them be old classmates instead if they wanted some link to Spock there and keep her as a human raised on Vulcan.

Did they even need the human raised by Vulcans angle at all? It is another very old fanfic trope, for female characters whose name also starts with an M, but really didn't seem necessary for the characters role in the narrative. It brought baggage they really didn't need.
